Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience", which had a preview at Sundance, was shot on Red with (reportedly) available light, not even fill, and with amateur actors, but for one porn star. Budget was $1.6 million.

Since there are already a number of 35mm films shot with available light, maybe there can be no real surprises here (no light, alas, looks like no light), but this one might still be instructive for the no-budget filmmaker....?

this is where I'm confused, and this could very well be a stupid question...

but how does one spend 1.6 million on a film without 50% of the normal crew and equipment costs? "Normal" being grips, gaffers, renting lights, trucks, people to drive the trucks, etc., etc..

That porn star must be very talented!

Most of it has got to be above the line.

If you shoot it right you can get away with available light and shooting with practical light sources. Personally I believe cinematography, like photography, is about framing and composition. Which you can mate with the light available to that location.
