  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Did anyone catch the opening ceremonies in Sochi? Matt Lauer NBC mentioned that 60 digital projectors were synchronized to produce the scenes on the floor.

I have tried to find some more info but can't seem to locate any.

I thought it looked amazing on TV.

What's incredible is that the building was built primarily for these opening and closing ceremonies. Only a couple of events will be held here. Wonder what happens to the building when the Olympics are over.

No one cares, once the Olympics are over. They spent over $50 Billion to built facilities for Winter Olympics in subtropics, which is more, that China spent on Beijing Summer Olympics. It was used as a great excuse for Putin cronies to steal 2/3 of all the money spent. The plans for Sochi Olympics were hatched during time, when Russia was awash with oil and gas money. No longer. Can you say Montreal Olympics?

I recently did an interview with someone who made his fame and fortune in Moscow and I suspect you are probably correct and it was the first thing that came to mind. He also said he believes Putin might be the wealthiest man in the world but you won't see his name on any top ten lists.
 
Politics aside, I would also like to know more about the projection.

I can run an Olympics cheaper. One event, erect a May Pol and get everybody to run around it in opposing directions until knocked out or retired. Scores are based on how many rounds you have done by the time you are knocked out or the last one running...so you have to run really really fast to beat the second last fella. Sell the television rights for a million and everybody can watch it from the pub...

Hello Steve!
This building called "Fisht" was built for ceremony of opening and closing of winter olympic games of 2014. Only 2 bandy games planned on 2014 here. But primary goal of "Fisht" is soccer games of 2018. To that date it must hold up to 45k of football fans.

just watched the bbc broadcast of the sochi ceremony, highly recommended over nbc...
can't wait til we can choose which event commentators we want to stream... or mute

you can stream it via bbc iplayer if you're in the uk
or if you want the fastest/easiest way, find it on a pirate ship
or you can look for it to pop up on youtube, etc...

i think vancouver is still the one to top as per projection, but the interdisciplinary coherence of storytelling @ sochi may be the best overall experience.
i'll keep an eye out for anything else about sochi tech and we'll look forward to the closing ceremony (and the games in-between, go usa snowboard sweep :)

soo, this is a good example of commercial projection that -quite frankly- i was already tired of years ago

yes, it engages the full facade with flashiness... and that's about it.
it reminds me a lot of graffiti... not, like, street art graffiti... like, self-aggrandizement, gang-sign graffiti

'look ma, no brains...' :banghead:

i'm not opposed to commercial sponsorship per-se, but this trend is ruining public projection art... don't do it!

 
i've sent the company email to see if i can talk with someone about the convergence of art & tech in their work... hopefully i can get a response (:
