I heard the term in a few interviews related to the Scarlet camera, and I also encountered it on this forum.

What's a soccer mom?
And why would a mom need a $3k camera?
And since when do americans play soccer?

The soccer youth movement in the US is huge...not in comparison to Europe, but still very popular here. From a professional standpoint it is gaining ground, but still has a lot of growth potential.

Humans love soccer!

"In North American social, cultural and political discourse, soccer mom broadly refers to a middle- or upper-middle class woman who spends a significant amount of her time transporting her school-age children to activities such as soccer practice. The male equivalent, soccer dad, is less-used.

In a literal definition, soccer moms have children who play soccer. The term has been extended in popular culture to include mothers anxiously running their children errands in oversized SUV vehicles while chatting on their cell phone. To some extent the phrase has begun taken on a negative stigma. Nissan, who had for several years courted the "soccer-mom" image, repositioned its Quest minivan as "stylish, sexy and desirable" [2]."

Yes...I know...I live in Europe and soccer is the most popular sport here.
But I didn't know that americans enjoy this sport.

Yeah....I read that definition from Wikipedia too, but it still left me scratching my head...
Why soccer?
Aren't any baseball, basketball,karate,etc. moms?
Only those children that play soccer are transported to practice by their mothers?
Is soccer some sort of an elite sport in America and only those rich enough play it?

And I still don't understand what those moms could posibly do with a $3k camera.

Soccer is very popular as a participatory sport for youth. Virtually all can play at all levels, some extremely competitive, while others are more relaxed and fun. But baseball, football and basketball suck up all of the air in the room form professional soccer here. Maybe Bekham will change that.

"Soccer Mom" is not necessarily perjorative. I saw two escort services in Las Vegas advertising their "soccer moms."

These ham-handed explanations indicate that I am the only actual soccer mom on these boards who owns a RED camera.

The term "soccer mom" was being used as a metaphor for middle and upper middle class moms who spend their days chauffering their precious darlings around to a range of after-school activities (soccer being only one of myriad choices, including karate, ballet, music lessons, art class, tennis, swimming, etc etc.). Jim and Ted are not soccer moms and they probably do not date soccer moms, so I can only read the invocation of this term as a metaphor for how accessible this technology will be to the middle-class American family, who reinforce this phenomenon.

Soccer moms do not tend to record their child's every gesture. That is the purview of the soccer dad.

The soccer dad with the jones for every new toy is the only one who might purchase a SCARLET for the purposes of documenting their child's development.

As an actual real-life soccer mom, I can tell you that there's no need for a camera beyond an HV20. Soccer moms who are disinterested in the practice of shooting video do not have time to shoot RAW and process footage.

They rely on the soccer dads, anyway, to wield the technology.

And soccer moms, like me, who shoot video professionally, don't have time to process the family footage. It's like the cobbler's children who have no shoes.

So the idea that soccer moms will buy a SCARLET is kind of misguided, although soccer dads might, because every man likes to think his camera is the best. That is another reason that I will shoot after school activities with an HV20, because every time I take a camera larger than a Handycam to an after-school event, every dad wants to talk with me about it, while I'm shooting my child's event.

I don't need to document their performance anxiety...so I have to disguise myself as just another Shakycam at work shooting shitty video of my kid that no one else will care about....

I can't tell you how many Dad voices I have in my audio saying, "That's a BIG camera you have there. What a big lens you have! What is it?"

I finally got fed up with answering Dad questions and bought a Handycam.

So don't take the whole "soccer moms" metaphor too literally--it's just a metaphor which represents the further democratization of the medium that Jim & Co. are bringing to bear on the industry. 3K for the masses...

How about a camera for angry white men? :angry03:
Scoccer mom and angry white males are terms used to decribe Democrat and Republican voters. With all the bitching about Scarlet's fixed lens, it seems we have a lot of angry white men on this board.

Soccer (as in football to most everyone else in the world), cycling, swimming, running, etc.. Are all hugely popular. Americans are sports-nuts. We have been playing soccer in this country forever... I played on soccer teams when I was a kid (I'm in my 30's now). I have a cousin who is starting college this year on a soccer scholarship.

Yeah....I read that definition from Wikipedia too, but it still left me scratching my head...
Why soccer?

Why soccer? Because soccer really is that popular here. Soccer is that one sport that nearly every kid plays on an organized team at some point. Girls, boys, etc.. Soccer is soccer... Not a whole lot different here than anywhere else in the world. What is different about it in america is we have so many other professional sports that hold more media attention and generate more cash sales. They overshadow soccer on a professional level. While most kids will play soccer, many of them would rather dream of becoming a pro football (american football) player, baseball player, hockey player, basketball, race car driver, etc...

Many don't realize it, but stock car racing in the form of NASCAR here brings in more gross revenue than all other american pro sports combined.

Aren't any baseball, basketball,karate,etc. moms?
Only those children that play soccer are transported to practice by their mothers? Is soccer some sort of an elite sport in America and only those rich enough play it?

You will hear terms like "hockey mom" or "swim team mom", etc.. They mean the same thing as "soccer mom", but don't carry the same universal understanding or commonality. Soccer is not elite in any way. Actually soccer and basketball are probably the two farthest sports from being elite. They require a few people, a ball and a place to play. Not like signing your kid up for hockey... Expensive facility costs, lots of equipment to buy, etc..

And I still don't understand what those moms could posibly do with a $3k camera.

I'm in complete agreement with you there.

Soccer is by far the most popular sport for kids to play in the US. According to this article, there were 17.5 million kids playing soccer in 2002, 2.2 million playing baseball and only 260,000 playing football.

It happens to us dads too! For my kids' functions, I break out the Sony HC3 palmcorder. No one even pays attention to it, lately it isn't even the most advanced camera in the audience. Makes me feel like I'm cheating my kids out of future viewing quality though.

But whenever I would have out the HVX200 on the Cartoni tripod, I would get all sorts of comments. Everything from other dads dying to know about my camera and where they could get one or how much it costs. Or other comments like "I didn't know they were having this professionally shot. When do we get the video?". ...Yeah, I got asked that last one as I was setting up an HVX200 before my daughter's spring ballet recital last year.

These days, I fly under the radar with the HDV palmcorder... I typically do my white balancing off of some old lady in a white jacket. Scarlet would at least eliminate that step.

This is wierd, while having a full understanding of the term soccer mom, out here in South Africa soccer is played mostly by the lower class, living under the bread line, black youth. The thought of their moms, (who usually find work as domestic servants / running a tuckshop on a street corner selling chappies and single cigarettes / Work as prostitutes for Filthy german tourists who have no concept about AIDS). filming it on a Scarlet is absolutely bizaar!!! Never mind the fact that she can't read or write, Has no computer, doesn't own a tv, and probably won't earn $3K in 3 years, and would have been mugged long before she finished the walk from her shack to the local dusty soccer field...

Any way, i hope that my future wife will be a soccer/rugby/surf mom that does record our childrens activities on a scarlet or whatever new amazing cameras will be produced by red by the time out kids are old enought to play sports!!!

very enlightening, everything one needs to know about South Africans really.

I didn't give you permission to use my picture. Or my words for that matter.

The Reduser defintion of Soccer Moms:

"Rich, Hot MILF who shoots her children's events on Scarlet and then pays handsome Reduser DITs big bucks to help her with post... as well as other "services." ;) Reduser DITs guarantee to be out the bedroom window in 30 seconds... or your money back.

Ha Ha! LOL
As much as I want to use the Scarlet for "movies," I'm sure for those "other movies," it will come in "handy" too! And my MILFs don't have to be rich...just hot!
