To Jim and co. Am I right in assuming that, during all this testing and tattooing you guys have been building up an inventory of Epics ready to ship? My imaginings are pallets of Epics in the warehouse awaiting final release firmware upgrades to flow out the door in a wave of 5k HDR goodness as soon as Jim pulls the trigger. Please say it's so!

Probably when Tattoo program (Soderbergh, Jackson, etc,..) is finished and also when production facilities in a different parts of world are ready to deliver...

Around Christmas as a first date and about NAB 20011 as a second date of possibility...

But at the end of that story really nobody knows...!!!!????

Why would you have pallet loads of Epics in warehouses when the camera is still in testing? I think Sanjin is bang on the money - asuming RED can find the right manufacturer which is a big assumption in today's world economy...

Just be realistic. My opinion! Tatoo needs 2-3 month! Deleting bugs from Tatoo 2-3 month! Stage 2 is about 2-3 month! Stage 3 - 2-3 month! So in the best way we will see Ready Prototapy in january! Stage 2 - NAB 2011! Stage 3 - Summer 2011! And Stage 4 - autumn 2011! So Scarlet is about 4-5 month after Epic so winter 2011/2012! And if will not be delay! If will be delay so plus 3-5 month!
I understand everybody wants to believe in optimictic hope...but if we are talking about realictic date we need to think rationally! Every time when I am telling this I am getting provoking remarks...but remember voting about this most of us was think we will see Epic in August, maximum in October...so what do they think now? November? December?
I am waiting for Scarlet for two years with my projects I can't buy anything similar to Scarlet but be realistic we will be able to buy new Red cameras in the best way - autumn 2011-winter 2012! In the not optimistic case summer-automn 2012! It is my opinion based on previous development! It is hard work with a very long time!

Alexey, you live in a cold gray world with little hope.

But then again, who am I to say you are wrong or being pesimistic. Only Jim Jannard can do that.

Time will tell in due course.

This world is really gray and cruel:)!
Don't be naive!:)
For now all optimistic hopes were crushed!:)
And of course you think the next hope will be realistic:)!
I think we just need to be maximum exact for our plans!
I was thinking to start my project in November 2009! It was wrong hope!
Let's see!
Anyway I think the key time is NAB 2011!
Panasonic Ag AF100, Sony 35mm digital prototype,
Ready Epic prototype, Maybe even ready Scarlet Prototype!
Let's see who can forecast better!:)

I haven't seen significant changes to the body apart from the announcement some weeks ago that the Epic brain will enlarge to (presumably) better accommodate temperature management and of course, the SSD media. Beyond that, I see no reason why the board stack or the housings should change. The feedback we're hearing is filled with exceeded expectations and no fundamental failures-- the cameras seem to be producing imagery as predicted to a level that is within the design spec. I'm sure that tested components are probably starting to pile up somewhere. It's certainly possible that some small inventory of finished modules are being tested and assembled.

However, Jim mentioned the prohibitive cost of making Tattoo units thus scaling back the sample pool of Tattoo cameras. Maybe we'll find out more when he returns from Wellington. Would love to see motion HDRx footage from the posted still he took with that beautiful winter light.

In the July Q&A session, Jim indicated they should be shipping significant numbers within 5 months. Not a formal announcement by any means, but encouraging.
They are building Epic here at least. No reason why they would not already be in small initial production runs and getting the production line setup and debugged while final proof testing with the Tattoos is going on.
If they have time to pursue features like HDR, the basic performance and feature set must be pretty solid by now. They were only adding about 1/2" to the body length, this would be hardly noticeable unless the new and old versions were sitting side by side. Is the working prototype Ted has at IBC the new body?

The RED ONE is now manufactured in the US. This according to the SSD thread. So, you might think that this manufacturing partner will also make Epic. Which means they have found someone and are tooling. I'm still hoping for 2010!

Alexey, why don't you just rent a Red for your project. There is no magic that you can film with an owned Red vs a rented Red. Bring color back into your life, stop waiting, start creating! Life will be less crushingly bleak then! ;)

It is impossible!
One day rent is about 500 USD! 14 days is about 7000 USD!
I have 3-4 pfojects - it is about 20-30K only for rent! I can buy RED ONE for the same money if I would have it for rent!

Rental houses do weekly rentals which they charge you either 2 or 3 days depending on package or house.

I just spent couple of weeks on this. The main problem is not lack money or the desire. Russian or ukrainian companies simply can't obtain rental insurance. According to DeWitt Stern underwriters, based on the order of US State Department, no company operating in US is allowed to issue the coverage for those countries. Therefore, no insurance, no rent...
In those places rental week is six days:-)

What if a DP was going to bring his/her camera package to Russia or Ukraine for a shoot. Would the insurance company not be allowed to cover them?

Shane, we think alike. Someone (Gunleik Groven, I think) started a poll around the time the bug was all the talk. I took October in the poll. I stand by that choice.

Your insurance company, from your country were you reside and have your business will cover your gear no matter were you travel, but some insurance they will add a premium for taking the gear out of the country, for this many choose not to tell when the gear does leave the country.

Alexy, are you a DP or producer/director? Seems to me if you're the latter, you'll find a large number of people on this forum willing to pack themselves and their camera up and travel to your neck of the woods and shoot your projects. If you're a DP, as many have said, just buy a Red One M-X and get your projects made. Even if you then put your R1 on ebay when Epic finally ships, you'll loose far less than the rental cost on four projects. And I don't want to hear, "But I can't afford a Red One". They're cheaper than Epic. Same goes if you're waiting for Scarlet. If you have that many projects lined up, "rent" the camera from yourself and use the rental to buy one.

I think we do Elsie. My reasoning is I figure they can't be that far off, given the esoteric stuff they're working on (90 degree mounts, HDRx) and that there are cameras out shooting major feature films. Sure, there has to be firmware changes but they must be close to locking off the hardware (?). I go to sleep at night with visions of glossy black boxes piled high, waiting for the last stage before shipping out in bulk to a place not too far from me. I don't know. Maybe it was Utah.
