  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So what... is FLUT?

I'm VERY excited to see the results.

When I can create a FLUT in a software application and load it into the camera - it will be champagne time.

I'm so happy that Graeme is part of the RED team.

FLUT is the brainchild of Graeme.

FLUT includes a new color space- REDcolor (more accurate than before)

FLUT includes a new gamma- REDgamma (more info from RAW than before)

Jim

Thanks Graeme for the extra effort... better sensor profiling (new color space) with floating point LUT processing and a more forgiving gamma curve (new gamma) in the acquisition step is the recipe of success...

Thanks Jim for your open mind, I'm sure it will pay off...! If I was too loud in the past, it was for the best...

I'm waiting to see the results on my filmout's... I will test it on negative whenever get my hands on it...

...and now press the compile button over RedcineX code!!!

Congrats everybody. can´t wait.

If you haven't clipped RAW, you haven't clipped any ISO. Move your mid grey anywhere you want without fear of clipping.

OUTSTANDING ... I can therefore carry on using view => RAW ... safe in the knowledge that in post all will be doable :hurray:

Will it be available soon after RED Day ? (for M users ?)

Interesting times... looking forward to hearing more.

Although "F" stands for "Floating Point", it my mind it stands for many other things beginning with "F", ranging from "Flexible" though to "Flutting gorgeous".

I think you mean American.

actually Graeme is Canadian... which is still North America so what the heck, 100% American

at least we've got something to offer now.

Ex-pat British, now Canadian. Love it here - fantastic country with nice wide open spaces and countryside, which I see non of as I'm in the office coding.

Graeme

Does FLUT work with "the IEEE Standard for Floating-Point Arithmetic (IEEE 754)

the most widely-used standard for floating-point computation,

and is followed by many hardware (CPU and FPU) and software implementations"
?

Top 10 reasons why Graeme works so hard:
(in no particular order)

10. Jim will scream at the parts if he doesn't. Must protect them.
9. Jim offers to ship copious amounts of single malt Scotch if he does.
8. He wants to make his second Daughter's "First Steps" video closer to reality.
7. Canada is cold, he needs a reason to stay inside.
6. Something very interesting goes here...
5. RedUser will praise and ship booze if he does.
4. He is an addict.
3. England may never win an other World Cup, needs something to cheer about. (j/k, go lions!)
2. He wants to make his avatar even more sexy.
1. He accepts and enjoys that he is an addict.

Sanjin, how it works is irrelevant. However, I can assure you that the precision in the image processing pathway is more than sufficient for that data, and that is relevant.

Roberto, 4 is the right answer. And it's my 2nd daughter's first steps I got on RED. I don't have any sons. See First Steps In 4k.

I think I still have the QT in my other computer.

Corrected (+). :Angel_anim:

My apologies for the confusion. Hope the family is growing healthy and happy.

Hard to tell at that age unless they're wearing a rather gender obvious colour!

And nearly two now.... How time flies.

Sounds like it's the opposite of FUGLY!

Awesome stuff guys! :001_cool:

Very keen to see FLUT in action. I guess this will mean it is no longer necessary to strip off all meta-data to ensure no channel clipping. Looking forward to seeing it implemented in the SDK so that applications which work in float (for my purposes that means Baselight and Nuke, but there are plenty of others) can read an R3D with camera meta-data, and have access to all the information from the RAW. That is a huge deal. Thank you Graeme.

I can see that with M-X's lower noise floor, and therefore ability to protect more highlight detail without worrying about noise in the mid-tones, it is an even bigger deal.

Bingo! To me, that is the biggest / most important thing about FLUT. :)
