  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So, officially no other cameras can be mentioned on Reduser?

I ask for clarification,

I've seen Martin Weiss close down two threads at least that I'm aware of, one of them a thread I just posted minutes ago on a new 3D camera by Sony. Such camera points towards an interesting trend in the immediate future of the art and industry of 3D, a trend to which RED could contribute to, or benefit from, but because another camera company was mentioned, the thread was closed. Is this policy final on Reduser, or are some moderators enforcing it at their own will a little too strongly? I agree that this is RED's home, but in today's world, it would be very difficult for professionals who like to contribute knowledge and insight to this forum if they have to totally refrain from mentioning other products besides RED.

I can't say that I am completely understanding what is and isn't allowed. In my mind it is our duty as professionals to talk about what is out there or coming out, though this should not extend to asking questions about solving issues with other cameras or workflow etc... But then where do you draw the line. If you start a post saying you are doing a red shoot but want some tiny cameras attached the character, and you ask this question. Someone then says Go-Pro is currently an affordable option with good quality video. Would that be allowed? Have some people spoilt it for the rest of us by acting immature in the past and not being professional when discussing other cameras?

The point of being part of a community is that I come here to talk about RED gear first and foremost, however I respect the opinon of people on here more than other forums I might glance over for reviews.

Sorry, Jim's orders... You want to discuss someone else's camera, go to their forum and do it. You can still discuss other cameras, where they apply to RED workflow and production. Such as using a certain camera in conjunction with a RED One, etc.. But the other camera discussion got really out of hand for a while and it was clogging up the forums, enough people complained, Jim didn't like it, etc.. So we cleaned house and clamped down on it.

Unfortunate in some ways because this is one of the few forums where we have a ton of very knowledgeable and passionate people coming together. But we also have to accept that this is RED's house and they try to keep discussion of others' camera products to a minimum.

yeah. didn't work well here. maybe that can change again in the future, but for now there are other forums within the landmine family (dvxuser.com) that you can discuss all things non-red at. Or, if you prefer somewhere else, Chris Hurd runs a great one at www.dvinfo.net

Actually I am quite happy for some of it to go, even though some is unfortunate. As Jeff has said, there are knowledgeable and passionate people here.

Many discussions have been just silly, comparing unreleased cameraspecs with unreleased cameras. As an intellectual abstraction, that's fun. It's not very informative, though...
Unfortunately some of the discussions became clogged with just passion, and not too much knowledge.

Hopefully, when RED has released all their cameras, relevant discussions can be taken up, but there are other good lists available which are not tied to a single brand.

Creativecow
dvinfo.net
Dvxuser
CML.net
And
Cinematography.com

These are the first that come to mind.

Arri has its own forum, I guess Sony, Panny and Canone have their own as well (never tried to find them...)

Pure bashing and namecalling is not appreachiated on any of these other lists either.

I'd read for a while to tryto sync with the temperature before posting....

Reduser is actually quite a liberal place to be all in all... :-))

Thing is - I guess - some want to discuss with some of those one have learned to know and respect here...
Maybe a "reduseruser" backup forum is needed for the addicts who cannot handle the pressure... :)
I think it's called "Facebook" or "Mail"

(I guess Jarred would point us towards dvxuser, though for these discussions...
Is it ok to discuss RED in comparison with other cameras there? Haven't been there a lot since reduser came up...)

Fair enough, I understand and respect that, just needed some clarification on the subject. I, for one, was getting utterly sick of entire threads dedicated to DSLR's "virtues" and techniques, but it is somewhat unfortunate that when a relevant industry trend or idea, even if such trend is spearheaded by other companies and their products, merits discussion as it pertains to a field where RED is very much involved and digital cinema at large, cannot be addressed because of those reasons. I guess that's the price we pay for eliminating trolls and noise...

glad you got your explanation. now, if it is ok with everyone (or not), I'm going to close this down, as we've had a million threads on this over the last year as it is :)

Thanks.

later,
Jason
