I'm showing a short film shot with RED ONE and 5DmkII on new Panasonic PF12 65inch plasma through Matrox MXO2 Rack via HDSDI. I have the Apple Color project I graded and you can see it with Euphonix MC Color and MC Transport. The data is coming from the SmallTree GraniteSTOR via 10Gb connection (prores4444).

Matrox MXO2 LE is officially out in Japan and showing with the Mac Book Pro and the data coming in from the same SmallTree GraniteSTOR via 1Gb connection without stopping (1080 prores422HQ).

I also have the new i5 iMac working with Matrox MXO connected to TVLogic LVM243 (new) with dual-link capability (but with MXO is single link). Of course, the 1Gb onboard ethernet is connected the same SmallTree GraniteSTOR.

Lastly, I have another Mac Pro connected to MXO2 MAX, with 10Gb connection to the same SmallTree GraniteSTOR, playing back 10-bit 422 uncompressed footage.

THEN, I'm mostly at Visual Processing Japan booth in the morning to early afternoon, showing Musetex's Mac Pro solution with RED Rocket (we named it RR PrimeSuite), but RED Rocket connected via Magma ExpressBox2 (x8 2 lot PCIe expander for Mac PRO and Mac Book Pro). It is connected to VPJ's metaSAN solution and RED Rocket is connected to TVLogic XVM245W, dual link capable 10-bit EBU grade1 LED backlighted LCD display.

Here the teaser photos I took today.

Great set-up Kaku-san!!! .... hope you have a really busy show .... quick question - why did you go with EOS 5DMk ii and not the EOS 7D? .... 5D only shoots 30fps and has massive FF sensor whereas 7D shoots 23.98 and has same size sensor as RED ONE?

Be interested to know your customer's feedback on your set-up and what they thought of the RED/Canon Intercut footage.

All the best,
Neil

P.S. How much better is the Pana PF12 plasma? ... we have the PF11 with SDI module in one of our grading suites .... works like a dream .... great viewing environment for RED/Canon material.

Thanks Neil-san, I think we will have a blast!

We used 5DmkII because the cameraman, Rowland Kirishima owns 5DmkII and the RED ONE. It was for a DVD that Client asked so we went for 29.97p. To be honest, I hate to grade 5DmkII picture most of the time. But actually there were some nice shots Rowland shot with 50DmkII.

PF12 is better than PF11 in the gradation steps by about 1000 steps. I was having headaches on 10-bit none IPS LCD monitor (Sony Bravia) so I'm so happy with PF12. I'm glad I waited but nicely priced PF11 is such a valuable choice, too.

Oh, I forgot to mention, we also have many other things like Cineform 3D solution, Media100 running with Matrox MXO2 LE on PC, LogicKey Keyboards for production software at our booth.

Kaku, nice setups :)

How are you getting the rocketcine ui onto the tvlogic? :-/ and is this then tue 10bit display of the images?

s

Thanks Simon,

the Photo shows DVI connection with TVLogic. Most of the TVLogic LCD displays have DVI input that works with analog/digital DVI. But since the graphic card on Mac Pro is not 10-bit capable, so it's displaying only 8-bit.

The dual-link or single-link HDSDI from RR to XVM245W with dual-link option can display 10-bit and the panel is 10-bit panel with LED backlight. For this booth, I didn't have enough space, so use the XVM245W for computer display, too.

We had a such prosperous first day of InterBEE today. Met up with Jeff and Lucas from Assimilate and I think their presence in Japan will be very promising.

Kaku-san,

Are you still alive? .... is your back aching? ... are your feet throbbing? ... are you longing for a hot bath? .... is your wife calling you and accusing you of having an affair with some young wild, sexy booth babe? ... if the answers to all these question are 'yes' then you've had a great InterBEE.

So, what did your customers think about your Canon/RED Intercut demo reel? ... could they tell the difference?

We've set up a Canon/RED master class here in our LA Canon studio with some ASC DPs ... would you be interested in being the Japanese connection for advanced training? ... only Apple based workflows - no expensive HEAVYIRON Lie workflows.

Let me know how you got on.

Neil

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the concern of very detailed things what likely to happen at the show. Basically the show went amazingly great, I never experienced such succesful one before in this 23 years.

About against 5D and RED ONE, people can't figure out which ones are 5D and RED ONE since cuts were chosen from 5D so that it doesn't look obviously lower quality and I graded the 5D clips to have less saturation, more gradation in the lower light and controlled the high lights. But of course, I can tell.

5D would work great as a B-cam as long as you don't move the camera too much (or limit it only single axis panning).

About the training, I will see what I can do, I have to start providing clips to digitalcinemalessons first (now that I have everything) but I do give workshops to top post houses in Japan about RED ONE workflow, so if anything that I can consolidate with that would be helpful. What exactly do you want me to do? I have to say Canon people seem to hate me, though.

Luca,

Thank you. It is really exciting!

Get off the board already! :)

That's such great set up you've got. I'm set up very similar to yours with exceptions to the video I/O card (Kona 3), grading monitor (Cine-Tal), and the storage solution that I'm still looking for.

How do you like your storage solution? I've read the other thread you posted about the storage you were beta testing, but I forgot where that thread was

Also, how do you like the Euphonix panel? I'm considering the Tangent set, but if Euphonix is as good as what all the people say, I might consider one for my second system.

About the 10-bit TVLogic, how do you find its contrast? I beta tested one a while ago, but found the contrast (especially highlights) was a bit questionable as well as the viewing angle.

Congrats on your success with the show, and I hope we can get together sometime in the near future for some tech-talk and beer! We're not that far from each other :grouphug:

Hello Nook,

The GraniteSTOR is working very well for us. I can do x1 uncompressed HD, x1 Prores4444 (without the key channel), x3 ProresHQ from the same RAID without interrupting so far.

Euphonix MC Color works and feel very great. It's probably more efficient than Tangent Wave especially when you want to use it from the multiple machines because it uses the ethernet connection and the EuCon protocol. Only draw back is that it is only for Mac.

About TVLogic, your observation is the exact impression I had over a year ago. Then they changed the panel and the control chip. We bought XVM-245W (LED backlight) and LVM-243W and they both work really great. I see none of the issues I used to recognize. I have the DreamColor side by side but I can't get the DreamColor to show the same level of the dark level gradation as much as I can on TVLogic.

Thanks for the kinds words and I'm sure we will meet up one of these days :). I love Korean food!

Kaku -

Thanks for the info. I've tested the exact TVlogic model you mentioned (with 10-bit panel).
I guess they must have done something again to make improvements. That's a good thing.

Sorry if I misled you on the control panel. I was hoping to get your impression on the Euponix against the Tangent CP200. Since you've mentioned that the Euponix is Mac only, I will stick with the CP200 for my future Speedgrade suite :)

I'm very excited to hear anything about any storage options at this point. I've been looking at so many different brands, and they all seem to advertise to be the best.. or one of the best at least. Do you have any resources where I can get the pricing for your system? I believe you have three machines connected to a SAN? The data rate you described is just about the right spec for what I'm looking after.

Thanks, and I love sushi more than anyone around me, but I must say I love wasabi even more! :thumbup1:

Nook,

I compared the XVM245W to the Tamuz grade 1 and XVM2345W far better in the low level and the viewing angle. But actually, the latest I got was better than the last one we got. It improved in the color balance. The first one had the typical LED backlit LCD problem, it is biased to magenta, but the last one we got was neutral. If you got the Cinetal, I don't think you're in the market of any other LCD, but I will let you know how TVLogic works even so after I get my Klein K10 in my hand.

The storage is the SmallTree GraniteSTOR, I don't know if there's any Korean dealer, but person you can talk to is Paul Bjondal at SmallTree. Great person.

Yep yep, I don't think Euphoix will be supporting PC soon, so if you have other needs, then Tangent is the way to go. I myself have to get the Wave for the Rocket Fuel.

Hey Kaku,
Those are some cool looking rigs! Heard any rumors about the PF12 series in smaller sizes? 42", 50" ? Looking at a PF11 42", wondering if the wait is worthwhile.

Sean, Thanks, I was able to get the 65 inch because since it was not available size previously and doesn't conflict with the stock situation. I'd say worth the wait. I bet after or before end of fiscal year, you'll see the price drop in PF11 and (maybe already happening) start to see the 42 and 50 coming out.
