  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So it appears we're crazy...

In India , people are ARRI followers because this the company with whose products they have been dealing from the time film was invented....So it s some taking some time for people to understand..and lot of wrong info regarding RED workflow, overheating, crashing etc makes it more difficult...people never check back the facts and hold onto the rumours...But whoever has worked with us on RED MX has not looked back at 35mm.....and with EPIC things will change fast very fast....

I think this is relevant for a lot more markets than the Indian.
Make sure the users have a good experience - and we're all good.

Get angry at the customer for their preferences, way of working and prejudiced - and we're all in trouble.

Maybe the camera doesn't work properly upside down, hehe

Heh, I had a guy like that at one of my multicam shoots a few weeks back. Came in with every myth and buzz word ever mentioned.

He was surrounded by four devout owners and by the end of the night we made him a Red convert and I could tell he was a bit embarrassed about his previous convictions.

I love going up against those guys cause I always make them wish they never puffed up their chest in the first place!

In the end they are just pointing out their own incompetence.

Gunleik nailed it! Bring down their shields and they will be more open to learning.

I think a Mac vs. PC metaphor is in order again here. My father would always tell me how lame Macs were because of file incompatibility blah blah blah. I would fight with him and it only hardened his position. Then one Christmas I bought him a big, new, shiny imac and he never looked back. No words could convince him, but once he saw how easy and awesome his imac was I didn't have to say anything :)

Same goes for Red. Once they see it in action and you show them its not scary... they come around. Some slower than others, but they always come around. Remember, a lot of guys are coming from the film world and the Alexa makes them feel somewhat comfortable, so they cling to it. Its a hard transition for many experienced film DPs. They have been using the same technology for their entire careers and now they need to learn about histograms, compression ratios, gamma spaces, etc. Let's help them.

That doesn't mean I don't want to punch people in the face sometimes, but I never let them know it :) In 10 years we won't have to listen to such nonsense, but for now patience, education, and empathy are the name of the game.

Strange. In France, where people are... well, french you know... DP and rental facilities took the Red One train with and year and a half late, but now since MX, and for the last 6 months Epic M, everyone including several DP I know who are Arri priests are waiting to shoot with an Epic.

They praise Arri, but they know the direct competition of Alexa is Red MX, not Epic. They know Epic is above all the digital market. Even so they're french... They have seen both of the footage.

hahahahahahahaa...... I love those guys. They make me laugh out loud!

Just think this... While they're wanking, your banking... Let them stay with the 30fps PRO RES HD ARRI video cameras, while you shoot your 120 FPS - 5k raw camera.

I use that list of famous directors all the time and I show them this... Usually pushes them back into there little holes.

I wouldnt worry about the ill informed... When they actually use it the first time and actually press the 120fps button, that usually converts them.
If not, doesnt matter.. more fun for you.

I loaned my Red One to a friend who was directing a music video, and wound up lending a hand on what was otherwise a professional LA crew. None of them realized that it was my camera; they just assumed I was a hired 2nd AC.

It was fascinating to hear the chatter about Red going on around me from the rest of the crew. There are SO many misconceptions about the limitations of Red, and SO many inflated beliefs about the capabilities of other cameras that it is laughable.

These guys posture like they are authorities by nature of being professional gaffers, AC's, etc, yet they spout misconceptions on every set they go to. I was able to gently chime in and correct some misconceptions before folks understood that it was my camera (at which point I had to question the sincerity of what was said around me).

For every changed opinion, there are another hundred self-proclaimed experts out there spreading BS. It is genuinely frustrating, but I think Red is doing the right thing by focusing on changing minds at the top. When enough leading directors and DP's are singing the virtues of Red, the BS quotient has to diminish.

Meanwhile, it's up to the rest of us to provide a voice of reason when we encounter these kinds of situations. :)

Mac doesn't allow you to customize your hardware. that's not a design issue, but a control issue.

It's bad business, IMO.

Red is making a Canon mount.

If Red was like Apple, they would try very hard to figure out a way to make sure Canon lenses would not work on your Red Camera.

Adobe Premiere runs on a PC or a Mac. It's editing software. Who cares what the OS is? Isn't it about editing?

Final Cut only works on Macs. You think they couldn't make a version of Final Cut that works on a PC?

I don't think Red will ever be that kind of company.

Hmmm. I think you missed my point. I'm not comparing the machines. I'm comparing my dad's attitude towards computers to DPs attitudes towards cameras. But I agree with what you said too :)

Honestly, I find the DPs attitude in this example towards Red surprising. I know it's subjective. People have favorites. They get used to working with something, and it's sometimes hard to make a change.

But the only issue I've seen mentioned with the Epic is the streak flaring, which is not a big deal. And the footage is gorgeous, there's no doubt about that. So, hard to know why someone would be biased towards an Epic.

Did you watch the Zacuto Shootout? Those guys are pros, and they were pretty open to looking at the pluses and negatives of each camera.

Unfortunately the Epic wasn't available when they did the shoot out, so they used a Red One.

I look forward to the next Shoot out. I'm sure they will include an Epic.

I love those guys who say Red is crap....

I was buying a lens from a guy 2 years ago who tried to give me advice saying "buying Red is like buying a lottery ticket"

Saw him a few days ago and told him I am expecting my epic soon and he had a new level of respect....was very keen to help..... and no more friendly advice.
Some people have heard the news....others still shoot beta.
