  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sneak peek, courtesy of Adobe

cinewho? I see no need for them now.

Do a dissolve with two Red clips. What does it render your temp file to? Not Redcode RAW. You need an intermediate. Cineform 444 could work for this.

I was wondering about the RAW conversion itself and the ability to set ISO / curves / color balance etc.

Will that be part of the import process in future version of the importer plug-in , a bit like camera raw and Adobe PS ?
Or will we have an 'effect' plugin that we'll apply in PR or AE to tweak those values while keeping RAW data available and editable all the way to the final render ?

could it be possible to have both,

you get an option to set it "as shot" when importing, or you could tweak it and change it just like a good raw import tool, perhaps with scrubbing capabilities

then, once it is imported, those settings are contained within an effect that the clip is automatically imported with, so at any time you could alter and fine tune those settings

Got it. :-)

But to answer your original question, I'll probably use "None" to render my previews. Remember, people will be using working resolutions that are much smaller than final output resolutions.

For example @ 512x288 setting the compressor for Pr to "None" with Millions of Colors makes every 1 second transition take 12.6 MB, so if you wanted 1k then it would be 50.4 MB at 2k you'd be at 201.6 MB which is pretty high I admit, but if you are editing at 2k with good results, my guess is your system is able to handle bursts or even steady streams at 200 MB/sec. I'm running off an ICH9R Raid with drives that are several years old on this machine and I get close to a steady 200 MB/sec of read speed with 4 drives, I'll report how it is to work once we get the plugin.

I do think that Cineform will have a place coming up, because a good intermediate codec will be useful (for rendering on the timeline and for space savings), but I don't think that $2000 is the right price, I'm going to look at a few of the other codecs to see what they are charging. If there was a codec that did what cineform was doing but took out the raw stuff (since I assume that's why their charging so much) since we wouldn't need their raw options for transitions and renders and charged let's say 500 or under, I think it would sell like mad.

Edit: So BitJazz with SheerVideo looks like it could be a real winner

Price:$149 for 1 license $99 for 2+
Resolutions: It looks to be all resolutions http://www.bitjazz.com/en/products/sheervideo/faq/formats/resolutions.php#film
Bit Depth: Right now it's only up to 10 bit (can include an alpha) but they are close to releasing a 16 bit per channel version.

Not quite. $1999 is from Prospect 4K, a real-time engine for Premiere Pro, not for just a codec. We never sell just codecs as it is the workflow around them that determines their usefulness. NEO 4K is $999, that removes the Premiere accellerater, but still includes many file conversion, scaling and frame rate moduling tools. For 4:4:4 12-bit with alpha, NEO 4K is the entry point, and it will product significantly smaller files that SheerVideo, so even the codec alone has added value over competitive solutions.

SheerVideo 10bit support is in AE, not Premier. hasn't been any updates to it in about 18 months.

That could change in CS4 though.

Any news on the Adobe front?

CineForm seems to be misunderstood by some people. It is more than a codec it is a way of life. It redefines what a realtime workflow is. It gives you the highest quality of uncompressed files but only smaller. Up to 4K spatial res, 12 bit precision plus 4:2:2, 4:4:4(4) and RAW... :matrix: It is not just an "intermediate codec" forget the established association of "intermediate" it should be "Mastering Codec".

It is not just a codec it is a really fast and efficient workflow that offers an alternate to a DPX based workflow. IMHO the price of CF is well worth it. I am 23 and still a film school student and after learning about CF I bought into it and it has saved me money whilst still allowing me to achieve the same results as many pro post houses. If I can make a plan to afford it then that says something to other working guys who earn more money than me.

If you have Premiere lying around dust it off and download P4K. Convert some of your RED footage or other HD material into CF AVI's > import into CS3 and see for yourself. Take your R3D files transcode to HD import into PPRO and edit away, I have hit 13 HD tracks without any lag on a modest Quad core system. PLUS I have CC on all 13 tracks playing in realtime through LUT's and the power of CineForm's Active Metadata.

CF should be seen as a workflow turbo-charger. Perhaps it is not well publicized that when using CF and Adobe Premiere you are using CF's realtime engine and not PPRO's engine. The CF realtime engine is the magic.

Is that the case with PPro on the mac as well? It seems their are some performance differences between the two OS's

Unfortunately, the level of the performance we get on the PC is not available on the Mac. The video pipeline we built for Premiere took years of development, and is DirectShow based which doesn't port to the Mac. We are translating parts of the performance and workflow elements to the Mac, and CineForm codec itself is very fast. CineForm Mac solutions are getting stronger every day.

fulll audio and video support via transcode with HDlink yet?

could it be made to work the same in bootcamp or paralells on the mac, or are there limitations there as well

Bootcamp has no limitations, you have PC when you use Bootcamp. Parallels and VMWare Fusion are also way of running a PC in a Mac environment, these do work.

David,

Have you tried VMware Fusion 2.0 for any window based program yet?
I heard many good things.

Not totally...

For GPU based-applications, it is not the same. The NVidia drivers for Bootcamp are not from NVidia - they are from Apple, and have all kinds of wonkiness in them.

The drivers are still written by nVidia. In fact, I use the stock drivers from the nVidia website with the MacPro tower.

I am stuck using the drivers for the MacBook Pro from Apple. This is pretty common for all laptops and its because of the laptop specific hotkeys. The drivers on the laptop are pretty outdated too.
