  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sneak Peak - FCPX 10.7

Always appreciate Richard Taylor's FCP related live streams.
With the seeming death of FCP.co there is a new site that has also been keeping tabs on the update as well as FCP news.
https://fcp.cafe

The cynic in me says that FCP development has hit such a slow pace that the scrolling timeline is pushed as one of the update's marquee features.

The optimist in me holds out that there is still a bit going on behind the scenes with the FCP that may address issues like auto captions, text based editing, and collaborative workflow tools among others.

The realist in me says that despite large feature updates in other NLEs, FCP is still the fastest, streamlined, and stable editing app I've used and it allows me to get work done with satisfaction and minimal frustration.

Luckily there are options and all of the NLEs bring something good to the table.

Interesting though that I'm hearing of more people actually starting to regularly use FCP for iPad even over the desktop version.

Will be interesting to see how this all develops.

The fact that Apple use Black Magic DaVinci Resolve for all their events and promos and chip benchmarking should be all you need to know. FCP is dead.

The fact that 10.7.1 was just released yesterday proves that it’s alive.
I have my gripes with FCP’s development schedule but calling it dead is completely inaccurate.

Whilst my comment was slightly flippant, if you look at the release, it's nothing much to write home about;

There were no 'real' features released in 10.7. It's mainly bug fixes and improvements to aid the use of the M1/M2/M3 chips. And we all know they killed FCP at version 7...!

During this November's FCP Creative Summit, a question was very directly asked if FCP will have a similar fate to Aperture (the Apple Photo editor that was discontinued several years ago) and a FCP product manager stated that it was not the case and that the app is still being actively developed with a "bright future"..

For the last 15 years I've been hearing random rumors about Apple pulling out of the pro market whether with hardware, software, or both and none of it was true.

The development of FCP has been slow the last 5 years, no argument there and I would like to see new features released quicker for FCP.
To say the slow down in development indicates that the app is dead is not a historically reliable conclusion.

Think of the time between the different Mac Pro models culminating to the latest M series MacBook Pros and Mac Studio.
Very few people using the latest Pro Macs walk away feeling they are inadequate for Pro use. They're kind of redefining what a pro systems feels like. Those systems didn't happen overnight.

I think Apple takes their time with development and releases products when they feel they are ready to release.

Even with the latest version, FACP 10.7 is very stable and still quite fast which is not usually the case for software that's 10+ years old.
If Apple needs time to develop FCP to keep that speed and stability I'm willing to wait.

Skepticism can be good and I think it's great when developers are challenged by user requests but the "flippant" statements can be dead weight.

Apple's code of silence is not particularly helpful and I think they do need to communicate a bit better with the user base to help avoid the FUD. Even after the false start with the FCP X release and the subsequent fall out they still did not seem to learn some fundamental lessons
regarding communicating to a pro customer.

Whatever the case, we'll see where it all goes.
I have work to still finish with the dead app before the end of the year.

On that note, happy holidaze.
Best wishes with your editor of choice.
