Viny posted in an earlier thread on something that did not get any replies yet. However I am interested in this as well, so we'll have another go here:

'Is there any way to smooth the motion of Red footage in post production? I guess it will depend but just wondering... anyone?

vincent*'

On a shoot earlier, we shot some varispeed at 100 fps with a shutter of 1/500. In the end, we needed the shot to not only look good on a computer screen, but also a normal SD television. However most parts of the shot gave a jittery playback on tv. At the moment I hardly dare to shoot at a shutterspeed faster then 1/50 because of this. Are there ways of smoothing things in post? And if not, can some clever guy or girl please create a solution for this? :whistling: Please share your experiences on varispeed shoots and shutter speeds also. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

if nothing else turns up - maybe you ought to look into after effects and its "blending frames" ability.

p.s.: ...and/or "twixtor", an after effects plug-in.

The "correct" shutter for 100fps would be 1/200s - or a 180deg shutter in film terms.

i usually use a fast shutter when i need to put some vfx in the shot, like tracking objects.
after that i use a plugin like revision reelsmart motion blur for after effects to put the motion blur back on.

it works nicely, just pay attention when different object, one in front of the other are moving in different directions. i guess it's a pain for the software to determine what pixel belongs to what object.

i hope this helps.

See the Foundry promo in this 4K Workflow - it's Sticky...
The Foundry has a Furnace plugin suite for both Shake & Nuke - I use it all the time to stabilize 4K footage. Best thing about it - You get it for free for Your first project...
