Are you guys getting realtime playback of dpx or mov files in Smoke on a 8 core Mac Pro without the Qudro 4800/5600 and Kona 3? I would like to test out this trial version and get a hang of the software before purchasing it later down the road. Currently I can't play anything back at all.... pure beachballs on a Mac Pro 8 core 2.93GHz.

Is this app snappy for anyone without the AJA or Quadro? The app itself is beach balling like crazy & stalling like crazy. Even when I'm not trying to playback anything.

I would assume if its missing the required hardware needed it would be unreliable. More than the Kona3 I think it requires the 4800or5600 card to operate properly. It's probably not even worth trying without the proper setup. Contact your local sales rep and get a tour of the software. I'm sure they will be more than helpful.

I would assume so too.... but then again you would think the user interface would still be operable without the Quadro or Kona. I did get a preview from Cinesys in Miami. If anyone is getting at least a snappy UI without the Quadro or AJA cards... please let me know.

I don't think it will work without the proper hardware. I tried to install it and it wouldn't let me because of 'hardware incompatibility.'

SMOKE on Mac

SMOKE on Mac

I have been testing SMOKE in our lab and was able to get it to run using an ATI RADEON HD 4870 and a secondary NVIDIA GeForce GT 120. I also have the KONA 3 installed and everything is fiber optically connected to our SAN.

I dont really see the point of "get it to run". For that you have Combustion ;).

Kidding aside, the reason to get a Smoke is to have a system with approved hardware so you can make it fly. Smoke is not as much about features as it is performance and responsiveness. Just because Autodesk was able to port Smoke to MacOS doesn´t make it (a lot) less picky when it comes to hardware.

Andrae, have you followed the exact steps in the installation guide regarding software, network and OS?

Did a test on an 8core Mac MacPro2,1 with ATI 3870 and 12GB
Software did not change or getting faster since years.
The only advantage was to use any raidsystem to playback the files ( no crazy stone stuff to install )
Worst of all! Red files have to be converted before use ( what???? )
using a weblike 1000 step procedure:(
This makes a highend sofware like Smoke is, to a real non use thing.
And don't forget we are talking about a $ 10.000.- piece.
