  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SMOKE/PC dudes & dudettes, how are you doing it?

Gunleik,

But export from RedLine does create folders if you want.
You can give them any name you want instead of the default "EVENT"-naming. Automatically giving them shot ids as folder names
should be possible. Don't know how though.

Right?

Not sure that Smoke (or any other simular software) needs a strict
folder naming convention since at least Smoke can see recursivly through
folders.....

Greg? Maybe you know more about this?

Thanks Dylan. That tutorial is great. I guess I should rephrase what I was talking about. It's getting the process to work with Redcine that is the problem for me at the moment. The conform in Redcine from Crimson exports a single sequence. There is no directory or clip structure. At least that I've noticed.

Actually I haven't tried to rename the folders, but I'll check. I'm sure Ian can arrange it if it's not currently possible...

Hi there Animal (Nice name!)

I posted a lengthy conform how-to just now.
But reading this post, I see that you already know that stuff 8-)
A bit triggerhappy there....

1 frame error in Crimson, nice to know about (does it still exist?). Thx.

Doing clip by clip exports throught RC is all well for shortform, but as you said. It sucks.... I'd rather use my time making the pictures look even better 8-)

Btw, I don't work with Devon (Mr. Taylor I presume). I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet. I only "know" of him and his great Flame-artistry.

He's done years of brilliant work. Punch.no (his company) did post on one of the first musicvideos shot on RED here in norway. Devon was interviewed about the process in the latest Norwegian film / tv - zine "Rushprint". www.rushprint.no
(the print version only???)

Cheers 8-)

Hey guys I'll have to find out just how our FCP editor did it but she exported an XML into Crimson and then with that EDL loaded all the R3D files into Redcine (mac) . Then exported the entire sequence as 1080 DPX. Timecode will be intact however because the sequence was exported linearly and I had no need for heads or tails I imported the entire sequence and did not "conform" it traditionally on the smoke.

One bug we found in Crimson was an extra frame on each edit. There is a post here on that. Maybe it's fixed now but the workaround was to add -1 as a handle or if it's just a 30 second spot eye match to the offline edit.

If it's a 30 second spot I have also loaded the R3D clips into PC redcine individually and exported DPX's from there. I then used the FCP EDL to enter the proper edit points into the individual DPX sequences for the edit. Good for spots but way to convoluted for a music video or other long form.

Hey Hopkin, you work with Devon don't you?

Yep Mr Taylor is a long time friend.

This conversation is so relevant for me right now. We are trying so unsuccessfully to get a music video conformed in Crimson-Redcine-DPX-smoke. This biatch has over 200 edits too which was a limit in RC. But still we have sync issues. We'll find it eventually. I am NOT going to eye match 200+ cuts! Haha!

Speaking of which. Have you installed Smoke 2009 yet?
Trying to get it done next week, looking at upgrading from HD to 2K too.
Got a quote for a license upgrade, pretty steap..... but BatchFx is worth it.

Having both PC and Mac in a facility is a wise move.

We installed 2009 Monday...was fairly painless. 2K is worth the $$ as you also get full DPX support and 444 i/o

Did you watch Ian's video?

Which one is Ians? I've seen a few.

The 1 frame bug is still in the latest version of Crimson that we downloaded today. It seems our biggest problem at the moment is that RC keeps crashing on us with the Crimson EDL.

As much as I am also a PC guy I am glad that we have FCP on pwr macs here because our Red workflow would be even more convoluted.

watch this video and follow the instructions precisely, do not deviate:

Oh hee hee, I was thinking some guy's music video. Ian=the guy who wrote Crimson. I am downloading for myself now. The FCP editor has been looking at it and was able to get us this far. I have been on the smokey backend of all this. I'm diving in now though....THANKS!

The frame issue was resolved not by adding a -1 to heads and tails but a -1 to tails only. I haven't watched the video yet, so this is just preliminary. All subject to change!

BTW I love your unboxing video. Do you know a DP named Steven Hunter?

Hi guys,
I have a big problem for relinking DPX in Smoke 2008. I can load the XML but it won<t relink to the DPX. Actually, it seems like REDCINE changes the timecode of the file when exporting the DPX sequence. Anybody ran into that?

Are you using Crimson?
You cant just load the XML directly into Smoke (or anything else for that matter) You need to use Crimson...watch the video I posted above.

Yeh, I use Crimson, everything works fine until I export the DPX with REDCINE. I load the clips, load the telecine, grade, render DPX, create the roundtrip, open the roundtrip and nothing relinks. The timecodes changed. I see right on export that redcine is messing with the timecode.

did you watch the video and follow the steps EXACTLY as outlined?

I would be curious to know if ANYONE has relinked the DPX sequences from the FCP-Crimson-Redcine workflow with an XML or CMX3600 from FCP. :clown2:

...and if you have then you should really share! :help:

Hi greg,

I use smoke/flint 2007. I have a project who's coming in. By following the step in the video, the relink methodolgy should work without any other magical cooking trip?

Thanks for your help and support...

Hi guys, everything runs smoothly now. I had a timecode proble and a soft import issue but every is fine with Smoke 2008 now. The whole Crimson workflow works with REDCINE and all.

Thanks for the vids

Cool,

Can't wait to here how you got it working.
I've been too busy lately, haven't had time to explore more
Red > Smoke workflow ..... puh..... but I'll get there.

Just installed Smoke 2009 though, now with mxf support!
(I know I shouldn't mention P2 files here.... he he )

Have a great weekend
