Just wanted to let the fellow reduser know that ADSK has Smoke on Mac updated significantly.

The 2015 version has improved editing capabilities, a TL-effects workflow that translates when necessary into a node-base workflow for extensive compositing, and most notable many nodes GPU accelerated.

For a test drive the 2015 build is not ready for download yet. So for those who are curious I advise to wait another fortnight and then download the Smoke 2015 test version, currently only Some 2013 is available and Smoke 2015 is a huge leap forward.

Smoke is basically ADSK's NLE with a very feature-rich tool box for fixing every-day tasks and and contains Flame's legendary 3D compositor called Action which now has a 3D tracker also for Smoke users available. However, as a compositor it is not comparable with Nuke or it's bigger brother Flame but it holds its own compared to Avid's Mediacomposer, FCPX, and PP. Typical Smoke jobs are TVCs, corporate films, documentaries that need deeper finishing, and of course music videos and other artsy stuff such as trailers, virals etc... Currently I edit and finish a Red originated 90 min. documentary with Smoke, the range is wide.

One of its strength is a collaborative workflow with other Smoke and Flame seats. Archiving is as easy as it gets and solved a longtime headache issue for me. The next releases from 2016 on will utilise a subscription model like Adobe is already successfully using. The annual lease will be less than 2000k if I'm not fully misinformed.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated in any way with ADSK other than a happy customer and hooked Smoke user since 2009 when the Smoke on Mac story started.

how is smoke on the new mac dealing with the epic and dragon footage right now???? do you still have to transcode or does it still requires a redrocket to work fast? anyone at Nab had a chance to check this out, cause it seems straight forward, but they should have put the colorgrading features from lustre in it to compete with resolve.

The new Smoke 2015 no longer has interplay with Flame, you have to use Flame Assist to go between Flame. As of 2015 release you no longer can open up Smoke projects in Flame.

2015 release is a subscription only module unless you already own a Smoke license which gets you one free pass onto the 2015 release, any subsequent updates require a payed subscription to get the latest updates to the software.

A RedRocket would always speed things up with Red footage but the new SDK with GPU acceleration is very cool and there are some blazing fast GPU's hitting the market now.
