I currently own a Canon 7D and am looking in investing in a SmallHD DP-SLR monitor for it. I'm thinking down the road here as I eventually would like to buy a Scarlet and use the monitor with that as well. Does anyone know anything about the connection RED uses for their monitors? I'd want to be able to see the info that is displayed and such. Can I do that with an HD-SDI out and HDMI or do i need the special RED cable. Also, SmallHD also sells a 8.9" monitor with slightly lower rez than the DP-SLR (which is 5.6") from experience what do you all think about the screen size difference? They are both selling for the same price...is the 8.9" worth the extra screen real estate even though its lower rez?

Comments are appreciated. Thanks!

The Small HD monitors should work just fine with the various RED models.

In my opinion the smaller monitor is the best for general use. I like the idea of having a larger monitor on hand, but it can sometimes be impractical.

I saw the DP-SLR in person and it was really nice. I have the 8.9" and it is WAY to big for DSLR use on-camera.

The hd-sdi version of the 5" would be perfect for both the Canon Seven D and the RED.

Thanks! that really helps...i'm just going by what I read on the web. I wish i could have played around with one at NAB but i didn't make it out.

I agree with Matt Gottshalk.

The larger monitor just seems too big for on camera use, and I am a big fan of the SDI option.

Generally speaking however, despite apparent sharpness, larger monitors are better for focus.

What I'd really prefer is a monitor like the 5.6 inch and another SDI monitor that is 17" or larger on set.

On that note, I also much prefer using the 7D with HDMI to SDI converters. HDMI causes too many minor hassles in a working day, and the miniHDMI connector tends to break, thankfully on the cable side.

the smallhd 5.6 has pass through in it too, i emailed them a few weeks back to see how flexible the sucker was. That little guy is gonna be able to do 90-95% of what all field monitors can do. So you can have the nice 5.6 inch model and pass through to a bigger monitor for video village or whatever if you only have one SDI out on your camera, or hdmi, or whatever.

Judging by the specs and what people have said about it, it outclasses a lot of monitors 3-4x its price.

Just be wary, they claim a 75 day waiting period...for the pre orders! And they said they will be fulfilling pre orders before shipping any orders after release, so if time is an issue, I would suggest looking into Marshall and other brands...
