Anyone got experience with this monitor on the Red One?
I'm thinking about buying one of their new OLED displays. But I read somewhere that they need to be powered externally?

All third party monitors need to be powered externally. SmallHD can be powered by camera batteries through one of their backplates and they can also be powered by something like a D-Tap of one of your battery plates for the Red. The only monitors that can be powered through the camera are the RED monitors.

I just used their DP6 yesterday for 1st AC work. It is a pleasure to work on and IMO it gives you a closer picture to the final quality than the 5" monitor from Red. Grab a D-Tap and run it off the battery is my suggestion. I used it with their battery back and I kept changing it out more often than the Camera Battery.

Mine has a heavy yellow tint but it should come new firmware fix soon. Love the red lcd.

Not to get to off topic, but I'm having a problem displaying the smallhd's false color when using it with my RED One. And then after I turn off the false color, the entire screen turns blue. The only way for me to fix the the entire screen turning blue is if I turn the monitor off and then on again. Is anyone else having this problem?

I've used the DP1s, DP4s,DP6s, a few TV Logics, one or two of the transvideos, and even the wonderful panasonic BTLs. and of course... Red's monitors, and.. well. I (hate saying it, for a few reasons) but I really, really, really like the DP6 a lot. For so many reasons. But there's always a tool for every job... For me; as an all around 'kit' monitor, I'm moving over to the DP6.

I'll break it down.

Ergonomics. - The power switch is in a 'fumble free' convenient place. On the TV Logics (or at least the ones I've used) there's a weird groove that makes it difficult to find the power switch for those new to the monitor. If i'm out in the field with my red, and had to hire an out of town AC if I couldn't bring my own... (and they're not familiar with the monitor) it's going to be troublesome. ... Just sayin' The TV Logic is a nice monitor though.

Price point for functionality. ---- focus assist, the built in waveform/histogram, along with control for the focus puller (instead of having to toy around with the red while you're in the middle of a take) AND! also the BIGGEST thing for me, is the DP6, is cross-compatible with pretty much any camera system out there. I've used it on pretty much every camera out there, and it worked out great.

SDI in/out + HDMI, and the ability to run additional loop throughs. (not that you'd need them if you have a ET Breakout box)

There's also a lot of alternative power sources, E6 (canons) D-tap, or their proprietary batts. The E6s seem to be the best choice for the price, because they're lightweight, cheap, and pack a bunch. The proprietary ones are kinda meh' last about 3-4 hours tops... The D-tap of course is always an attractive option if you're cool with a wire being there... I'm pretty set on the E6 source myself.

Also --- About the lilliput... Paul hits it on the head... We plugged one in for shits and grins one day (I think it was a 669), and it was terrrrrrible. Colors, brightness, QUALITY, it's not worth the $200. If you want my two cents buy something you won't be humiliated bringing onto your worksite. Those are (maybe were?) used for el' cheapo car dvd screens... Maybe they're dubbing these film production monitors now, but, those things are total rubbish.

Also --- Cory,

Did you figure it out?

I'd say it's a software issue. So, SmallHD has a 'reset system settings' function somewhere in there... I'd just hit reset. Hopefully it doesn't do it again. I think there's firmware too on those. Maybe there's a fix for it. You know, you can always call them too; I'd bet they'd know way better than anyone here ;D

Try removing the hdmi (or bnc) from the monitor, then placing it back in..
Is it the connection in the cable?? Is it a short? Does it work with different cables?

Hope this helps guys!

AC7 OLED unless you need the touch screen. Will have many more features and a much better display. The AC7 is 720p, the 5 inch RED (old one is 1024, new touch is 800x400). AC7 also has multiple inputs so you can use it with any camera, not just RED.

I meant the old one, without the touch screen... The good part with the red screen is that it has buttoms but i am not sure it makes it a better option only because of that over the AC7 OLED! Is it worth getting the OLED? Should this be a nobrainer?

The buttons aren't really important cause most people had them set for 1:1 view, which the AC7 has built in, and false color, which again, the AC7 has built in. Plus it has more controls for focus assist built into the AC7 rather than having to set it up on the Red. So you have more options at your fingertips directly with the SmallHD monitor. It also has image flip, a 2x zoom for even more accurate check of focus over 1:1, the contrast is better, and colors are better and obviously higher resolution. It even has Picture in Picture function...

To me it's a no brainer to get the Small HD, just make sure to keep in mind you need to power it, unlike the RED monitor which is powered and signaled in the 1 cable.

so.. get this and a Red evf, instead of a Red 7" and Red evf?

well SmallHD is newer better tech, and higher quality, but the RED monitor plugs in directly the the lcd port. Remember you'll be eating up an sdi port for the Small HD Display. If that doesn't bother you I'd go SmallHD all the way.

If I were you I'd go for Marshall and TVLogic.
SmallHD is a relatively new company started since the DSLR era.
I've seen DP6,DP4 working on set. Not impressed with the image quality at all if you have ever used Panasonic,Marshall and TVLogic and other professional monitors.
BTW, SmallHD is the only monitor I saw which will explode on set mysteriously with sparks and smoke coming out from HDMI ports like a firework show.
