  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SmallHD AC7 OLED - Calibration Fail

So, has anyone been able to calibrate this thing properly yet? Sure, I'm not using it to be color accurate or to expose by, but why pay that kind of money for a monitor that can't simply be calibrated properly like all other professional monitors. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me! We still want to see a somewhat accurate picture representation on the monitor...

Yea, for calibration, it's tough. Black level adjustment is something I know they are working on frantically (per the conversation I had with the lead firmware developer). Even though SmallHD is a great company, I don't think we're their target demographic, which is why we don't have as much control over the monitor. They are releasing a DP7-Pro, though I don't know that will be easier to calibrate. I've got it somewhat close just with my naked eye, but it's still WAY off. OLED has something to do with that too. Maybe we just need RED Touch OLEDS. :-)

Convergent Design - Odyssey 7 or 7Q is where I will be putting my money!

Their monitor isn't as crisp as SmallHD's. I saw/tested both side by side, and still prefer the AC7 OLED, even if the calibration blows, compared to the CD one. Obviously, the Odyssey has the recording ability, but I feel that's where they spent most of their R&D time.

Hi there,

So Dave from Small HD says that, the AC7 SDI (I had to return, as the picture was breaking up due to interference from onset radios) 'had a specific resistor missing, making it susceptible to EMI'

Well OMG - why was that specific resistor missing ??????????????????????????????? - we are not paying Tidly Winks here are we ?

Isn't this stuff tested before they are shipped all over the world - Because these monitors go on productions (small and large), (where the AC is already stressed) and who just wants the monitor to work and be mildly reliable, so he can pull the god-damn focus.

The one who gets it in the neck is the rental company - because that rental company thought that Small HD made semi-decent product.

I won't mention colour calibration. Enough said !

I just received the HDMI AC-7 LCD version (not OLED) this morning, and tried it out on a shoot today, used it for my AC in combination with a Paralinx Arrow wireless transmitter. Lightweight, looks solid to me, haven't had time to study the color rendition in depth but it seems ok out of the box (certainly not perfect but it's not a reference monitor anyway, and I haven't even had time to play with the color settings yet). So, quite happy so far. I'll have to use it more of course to discover any issues, but as a wireless monitor it seems to be a great choice at a correct price. And btw I'm kind of picky when it comes to monitors ;)
I hope they'll make a 9" 1080p monitor some day soon...

And by the way, even if this is off topic, I really love the Paralinx Arrow. I upgraded to the multicast version and it's the device I've been dreaming of for a very long time. Easy to use, good range, multicast, extremely lightweight, reliable... I think I'll get 2 more receivers soon to complete the kit.

We own two of these AC7-OLED-SDIs and on our last series the rental house monitor technician 'calibrated' them for us but to all of our eyes they seemed extremely crushed and the color accuracy felt WAY off. Once the show wrapped I set up an Alexa and an Epic side by side and fed the signals one at a time into a 24" Flanders CM240 monitor which had been recently calibrated by Flanders and then out into each of the AC7-OLED-SDI. With the singlas from both cameras as well as a color bar generator, we set out to perfectly match the monitor to the Flanders' image. Granted I don't think it will ever be perfect but we were all EXTREMELY pleased with the final result compared to how they had last been calibrated. *Please note that this definitely gets rid of that crunchy OLED look so if you're fond of that, these settings may not work out for you.

I have an issue and I do not know if the Epic or the AC7 is at fault. It looks great out of the HDSDI, but Hdmi out of camera int to the AC7 is horribly crushed. Same settings. It's like somewhere along the way there is a gamma or DR change in the Hdmi which seriously screws the blacks. I don't have another monitor to test so I cannot figure out which is causing the problem. Anyone else had this issue and know what's up?

The HDMI had been crushing blacks. I spoke with Reed, and they are trying to address the issue. I recently received the DP7 Pro, and it's quite frankly the best monitor I have ever used. Blows the panel off the AC7 OLED. Incredibly color accurate. Love it

I was under the impression the DP7 and AC7 had the same panel just different hardware and software....

The AC7 and DP7 have the exact same panel. Like Tehben mentioned only the hardware and software are different. I just got a DP7 and it is perfect right out of the box. Hope they are able to get the AC7 to match eventually.

Had a similar issue out of the box the monitor looked super terrible :) Have spend a few hours calibrating it using CALMAN and C6 Probe. Below are my results. Now it looks actually really good. More vivid then RED LCD but thaw OLED

Contrast: 80
Brightness: 38

I'm not have to much of an issue getting it to look good over HDSDI.

I took your's Nikolai and modified it. I had been adjusting from the defaults with the RGB up in the 100-115 range. Much better down lower :)

This to my Eye matches my Red Monitor in current conditions.

EDIT: Changed Settings to fix red cast in blacks.

Adjustments made at 5600k.

EDIT: After even more tweaking.
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 45
Hue: 50
Saturation: 75
Sharpness: 0
R-Gain: 67
G-Gain: 75
B-Gain: 57
R-Offset: 113
G-Offset: 110
B-Offset: 116

However If I run over HDMI it crushes like crazy. See images.

The blacks have been crushed since the first release, don't even try to judge exposure off of it. It's a descent reference monitor though. But still waiting for a fix on it.

Hmmm crushed blacks? I'm thinking about getting the DP7, not sure about IPS or oLED though after hearing about the blacks
