  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SmallHD 702Lite or AC7?

702 Lite is NOT high brightness. 702 Bright, which costs $600 more, is high brightness (and also full HD, rather than 1280x800). Here's a few advantages to consider (any listed advantages are things the other monitor lacks).

702 Lite advantages:
3G-SDI
newer hardware and software builds, likely to get more updates
HDMI out
built in Canon/Sony battery plate
superior pixel zoom ability, plus scrolling around zoomed frame
has threaded mounting points on sides of monitor
Waveform, vectorscope, PIP, RGP parade, and histogram (I don't believe the AC7 series has these functions, but the DP7 series did)

AC7 OLED advantages:
larger screen (by almost an inch)
covers 100% NTSC and REC709 color gamuts
has threaded mounting point on top of monitor
optional battery plate gives more options (including V-lock and gold mounts)
barrel and locking hirose power input option
component and composite in
scroll wheel and click button navigation (I can only offer anecdotal evidence that this is an "advantage", but my friend has a 702 Bright and the joystick control is incredibly touchy, registering clicks instead of toggles and toggles instead of clicks. It can be quite frustrating at times.)

Thanks for weighing in Kyle

I thought even the lite version was HB too...guess I was wrong. I still prefer the 702 though to the A7C. Keep in mind that even with the 702 HB, you still will need a sun hood outdoors as it's not quite bright enough being in direct sunlight.

I primarily want something durable & clear that my AC can pull focus on. I really don't need all those advanced for this monitor, I'll have a bigger client monitor for all Those extra features.

What I'm wondering at the moment is should I keep my 702HB and use RED's 4.7 Touch or sell them both and get a RED 7 inch...

That 4.7 seems so tiny

i have a 7Q which I use a ton, more of a production type rig along with the 4.7. I use the 4.7 in an EVF position on my shoulder rig / ENG style handheld rig.

Both sizes are useful in different ways.

The 4.7" is tiny!!! When I saw it at NAB, I thought RED had introduced a new, smaller monitor because the thing was just so small, but no, it was the 4.7". Almost seems like it's half the size of the 5" touch.

I find lighting with small monitors like the 4.7" tough because it's hard to see what you're lighting, especially with layovers which make the image even smaller. Focusing on the 4.7" is a breeze though as the Edge Focus is amazing. But as I mentioned, 4.7" is a great size for ENG style shoulder / handheld setup.

I have an AC friend selling his DP7 high-bright...much better than the AC7, all the ins & outs that the 702 lacks, can take AB dionics on the back...more robust than the 702, so probably better if you're planning on using it off camera for an AC. I own both, and they have different strengths and weaknesses. I actually love the 702 as a large on-board monitor when supplied power from the camera, but off-camera it's a little more cumbersome to power because of the small size and relative lack of mounting versatility (vs the DP7 back plate for batteries). I'll PM you with his info if you're interested (he's in NYC too).

Thanks Clint, I'll check my PM. I'm looking for something to mount to a WC type director's cage. All this input is actually making my decision harder:emote_headwall:

This is reassuring. Haven't gotten to use the 4.7" yet and the wrapper is still on it... but I have an ac7 as my monitor for judging lighting. Was going to use the 4.7 as mainly control for the camera and event shooting (small cam or glide cam setups where lighter weight is beneficial), so it's good to hear that focusing is easy on it.
