  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just got an email from SmallHD support (Maker of the DP-1). At NAB they will show their new smaller version (since the DP-1 is 9").

It weighs only 10oz (284g) and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 resolution at 270 pixels-per-inch (ppi).

The price will be announced then.

Good to have options, right?

My DP-1 is on its way and I'm curious how it will perform. Can anyone share any experiences?

I've actually read one review where the person had terrible battery issues after 6 months of use or so. They stopped taking charge and or would say they are fully charged when they weren't. Screen itself has gotten rave reviews, but that was 1 incident with the batteries, not sure if its common.

Some of the original / older batteries had recharge problems over time. The new ones are said to be OK.
 
They actually sent me the revised monitor DP1x for the price of the original one which was 100$ cheaper. WOW!
 
very excited for this one coming out though... it's probably gonna be the best low cost monitoring solution out there. i think only thing it's missing is a video pass through so you can run multiple connections in and out of the thing. but for this price point i'm willing to live with it....

That is true. You'd need a HDMI-splitter to have that option.
 
same with SDI, it would have been wicked if we could got pass through's of all sorts. SDI in, HDMI out, vice versa. etc. patch video village, from it, all the good stuff. but again, really can't complain for 1100 dollars. the amount of pixels they pack in there and the color/contrast rendition alone makes this monitor worth 3 times its price...
 
I was one of the people who had battery failure, which at first I thought was a power problem. They were very quick to send me another battery and then sent a very cool email apologizing, taking responsibility and offering a choice of some goodies, including an extra battery or upgrade to dp-1x. So far, I feel like this has been a very responsive company. I'll be buying more stuff from them.
 
To my surprise, they are in the town I work in everyday. I've sent them an email and asked if I could come tour their facility and see the monitors in action. I will probably spring for the new monitor instead. They'll be back on the 23rd as I guess they were staying a bit longer! :)

In any case, once I get the SLR version, I will be doing a thorough review of it.
 
We also saw these monitors at NAB... amazing picture quality. Can't wait till these monitors are ready for prime time.
 
It truly looks superb for it's price, if they can squeeze in false color in there, it will be the best all around monitor on the market. at 5.6 inches, it's a pretty nice sweet spot in size, subjective of course, plus they are coming out with different battery mounts so you don't need to use their batteries if you don't trust them. I like the fact that you can USB charge them if you need to, sacrifice the laptop power to keep the camera going...

I asked them specifically about false color mode and they told me no that this is not something they think they will ever have.
 
I love manual Zeiss lenses, and was looking for a way to be faster with them in still photography, and overcome their lack of auto-focus ($350/hour models, you can't be fiddling with focus).

I think this might be the answer. if focus is good in true 720p, then I'm sure it's just good, period, the majority of the time (never something can't fix with smart sharpen), especially using the focus-pull "go-past-come-back" trick, which can be as fast as auto-focus if you're an old hand at it, and especially if the material is destined for on-line use, where the pic itself will never be displayed at more than 720p resolution anyway.

I think my clients will also think it is a high-tech and neat-looking approach, providing a fast way to see pics as we go along - faster than an external compu monitor, and way better the the wee LCD on the back of my 5D.

I love my DP-1 I bought from smallhd last June. Its great for most applications. But I did find that the 300 nits brightness was a problem when using the monitor on a steadicam rig shooting outside around the noon hour. I could not see a thing on the screen. I had to buy the Nebtek Solar HD 7 with a nits rating of 1000 to be able to see what I was shooting.
 
Tom, I think they are doing some sort of upgrade to the DP1x for not too much if I recall correctly. (Not sure if you knew this)
