  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

SLR Magic just posted on their Facebook page a price for the APO Microprime lenses:
$1199 - EF mount
$2199 - PL mount

The lenses are listed on their site as well.

The PL mount version looks substantially larger than the EF mount but the image circle is listed as the same. Can anyone provide any info on the differences? I imagine the PL can be adapted to EF like their previous cinema lenses I own, but I'm wondering if the PL is a better investment at double the price (with adapter) Since my cameras are currently EF mount.

Does anyone know of a wider angle lens that would pair well with the APO Micro/Hyperprimes?

I was looking at maybe a Contax Zeiss 18mm or something like that. thoughts?

I use a Tokina 11-20mm wide zoom, but i have to soften it a bit to better match the APO'S.

I recently bought the Scatter diffusion plug in for Resolve and will have to test to see if little diffusion helps match the looks better.

I love the range and expressiveness of the 11-20 but obviously I would buy an SLR magic wide if available.

Contax's are cool but you'll get more Chromatic Aberration with them. And also extra focus breathing I think.

i ended up grabbing a Tokina 17mm f3.5 RMC off eBay. It looked like it had the right amount of character and it was cheap.
It's still en route so hopefully i'll be able to test it with my full APO Microprime set.

Just a quick FYI, I spoke with Andrew last week, 18mm App Microprime is going to be made and still on the cards, however until the various quarantine requirements between Hong Kong and China are reduced or dropped, progress on the development of the 18mm is pretty challenged. Its currently 5 weeks quarantine in total to travel from Hong Kong to China and back, along with a very expensive mandatory hotel fee. The factory that makes some of the components is based in China so hence the major disruption.

I wonder if the 18mm is still in the works....
