SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

Hey guys,

I am selling my APO Hyperprime 32mm. It is in excellent condition. I've owned it for a little over a year.

SLR Magic PL to EF mount
SLR Magic PL to E Mount
SLR Magic PL to MFT mount
Metabones PL to MFT Speedbooster

The Future of this lens ecosystem doesn't look so good :( What are the best alternatives to these in a similar price category? Seems like there's nothing out there...

I'll be asking Andrew about his. However the Mavo primes look awesome...similarly priced...APO and full range of lenses. Dzo Vespid as mentioned above however those are pretty new. That's about it. Dzo zoom set will have u spending under 5k for a full focal range if you are interested in zooms.
 
I feel for people who bought into these as well as other "upcoming" lens series. I did the same with the Xenons when they first came out and learned a good lesson in patience. Better to buy complete sets and let the lens makers fill in with additional focal lengths as the added value. Sigma and Tokina did great with this, but how many people are still waiting for more Otus lenses?
 
From what I've seen Vespids don't have the same quality IMO. But that could be due to user error... Hopefully we're wrong and that the delay is due to Covid is as claimed. Just not sure why Covid would stop manufacturing at this point, but would be nice to get some info updates from SLRMagic. Guess we'll see.
 
Anyone have any updates about SLR Magic? Last time I corresponded with them over a year ago they indicated there was something new coming out I as a 4 lens APO owner would be interested in.
 
They are going to release an APO Microprime line in swappable EF/PL Mount.
No news on 18mm or anything beyond 85mm.

Are you talking about the "SLR Magic" brand name? If so, I agree ... :)
It sounds like cheap Chinese toys for DSLR kids.
Maybe they should have thought up a different brand name for their higher end products?

Adam thanks for the info- look forward to these for my second EVA1 to complement my 4 len SLR APO.


As far as bad company names, I own a turntable by a company whose name was TTWEIGHTS, because before they made turntables, they made LP weights and copper platter mats. once they started selling full tables, they realized they needed to change name to TTW, which worked better.

Unfortunately their main business, machining aerospace parts on 4 or 5 axis CNC vacuum was so profitable it got bought out and they had to close down the turntable business. Here's a picture of mine,sitting on an active vibration cancelation platform made for electron scanning microscopes and Chip production.

They also had a horrible habit of introducing new improved models ever few months, which constantly made owners own something not current.

Fantastic turntable!
 
I’m beginning to think SLR Magic might never release an 18mm. And I’m not holding my breath on the PL/EF APO Microprimes.
 
So many companies are behind on supply chains. A radar detector I’ve been looking into from a reputable but small company is half a year to a year behind schedule for release. Hopefully Andrew and company will be able to get their product line rolling. I used the APO’s on a job this week (first time in a year) and really liked the results.
