  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can the R1 one shoot at slower shutter speeds? I am pretty sure the answer to my question is no but I was wondering if there were any plans for a future firmware update that would allow for slower shutter speeds I was thinking around 14 or 16fps as the slowest. Is this possible Red team?

fps means frames per second, so I am a bit confused as to what you are asking for.

The shutter speed depends on your frame rate and shutter angle. At present you can shoot down to 1 frame per second, and if you do that at 360 degrees, you get an exposure time of 1 second.

If you shoot 14 fps at 360 degrees, you will get an exposure time of 1/14th of a second, at 180 degrees it would be 1/28th of a second and so on.

Sorry I just realized I worded my post wrong what I meant was obviously slower frame rates. Basically the only reason I am worried about it is because I am trying to experiment with using the R1 to record 16mm film off of a screen, some of which I believe was shot at slower frame rates because it was shot with a very old camera that only shot with slower frame rates. I hope this makes more sense haha.

Yes, then you're fine. 16mm might be shot at 18fps, and you can set your R1 at anything inbetween 1fps and 120fps.

Though shooting off a screen will give you some other problems, mainly that you'll get a hot spot in the center of the frame. It is much better to get a modified projector that you can sync to the camera, or lets you scan single frames.

I did some 4k shooting of super8, just for fun, and grain has never looked so sharp :)
