Slow USB 3.0 speeds when transferring large amounts of R3D files

Hi there,

I am transferring large amounts of R3D files (250GB-1.75TB chunks) from 5x 5400rpm 2TB drives to 5x 7200rpm 2TB drives simultaneously (via 6x USB 3.0 connections and 4x SATA III, with copy/paste in explorer) and the transfer speeds are incredibly slow. Initially the USB 3.0 speeds show up as quite fast (45-150mb/ps+) but then they slow down to around 3mb/ps.

The drives have not been manually defragmented but the vast majority of the files on each are R3D files.

I am wondering if the amount of drives/data being used/sent is what is causing such slow speeds or if there might be another culprit? I would be incredibly appreciative to learn of any solutions to increase speed significantly. Many thanks...

Those numbers are not surprising and would be affected by the number of simultaneous copies you have running, and how you have your drives organized.
Depending on your system, the six USB ports might be split across two or three channels, and if a source and destination drive are on the same channel, throughput will be halved at best and likely less due to I/O contention.

Same issue for the sata controller.

You will run into horrible I/O contention as well if you have more than one copy to/from multiple directories on the same drive. (e.g. Copying //olddrive1/day1 to //newdrive1/day1 and //olddrive1/day2 to //newdrive1/day2 at the same time.)

I would make sure I had all of the source drives on one connection (usb) and all the destinations on the other (esata) and only one explorer instance per source/ destination pair.
