What frame rate, capture format and compression is the best combination to get the the best picture and slowest motion? At the end we need 1080p video.

The best option would be to shoot at 5K, but 100fps is not enough. At 2K HD picture looks bad.

If you need faster than 100fps, you might be better off with an F700 or a phantom. As you crop in on the sensor, noise increases drastically. You could always try and do a blackshade at your currenty FPS/Exposure to help combat that extra noise.

You could also shoot at 120 FPS in 5KW, making sure your shutter speed is 400/sec+ allowing for software applications like Twixtor, Motion, etc to interpolate frames to slow things down even more. The best trick with this scenario is to keep the background simple, think sky. The cleaner the background, the better your end file will look.

I had no issues with shooting high speed 3k to 1080 output. 2k isn't very usable for 1080.

Thanks for the help guys, I will do one test tomorrow at 3K. I am planning to use Samyang 14mm lens, since we need to shot from octocopter.

Shoot and expose at 320 ISO. Ive had clean images at 320 ISO when doing 2K 240fps

+1 3K is the biggest tradeoff I'm willing to make these days, it still looks good and you can get some pretty nice framerates out of it.

Something I've been thinking about since I picked up an a7s (which has an 'APS-C mode' for 120fps capture) is wondering if somebody like WC could make a MFT or similar mount for DSMC, allowing us to use speedbooster adpaters for getting better FOV and exposure performance when cropping in for much higher-speed stuff.

Not sure how useful that would even be, just thinking out loud.

I have very good results using 2K at 190fps or less to keep the compression down. And not going above 640iso with fast glass and plenty of light with 180, to 90 shutter angle. All of this work went to 1080.
If you watch the first min or so you'll see the host Jeff explain the game. I'm using the Epic X for the Slowmo there in the Philippines and now seasons 29, 30 using the Dragon not just for games but some B roll and promo clips.

the slowmo in the game explanations is all Epic X and has been for 3 seasons and I started to introduce Red One to Survivor in Samoa Heros Vs Villans back on season 23. So Red has been being used on Survivor for over 6 seasons now. I haven't heard from post about any concerns about the quality. Only how great it looks.
