  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

how do you guys do the speed around and then slow down and then speed back up effect? I know how to ramp time and everything in fcpx but I am struggling with framerates. Right now I can shoot up to 96fps in 1080

Not sure what your asking for specifically since it seems like you know the elements already unless you mean changing frame rates in camera while recording (for example: 24fps to 96fps back to 24fps)? Which I think is possible with RED, I've never done it, only the other way: shoot at the highest rate you want for the desired slow motion effect (96 is 4x slower), then adjust either your light output, aperture, iso, shutter angle (I'd keep the shutter angle at 180 degrees personally) to compensate for decrease in exposure (you loose 2 stops of light going from 24 to 96).

I use premiere, but I am sure it is the same in fcp. All you have to do is set keyframes for the time remapping, which can be smoothed out to your preference at the keyframe marks. If I shoot something at 96 fps on a 24fps timeline, I speed up 400% to get regular speed, then back down to 100 for my slow motion parts along the keyframes. If you already know how to ramp speed then I am not sure what you are asking really.

ok i am close to getting this look, wonder if any fcpx users would be able to supply me with a small project file as a guide to getting this right? I would be willing to pay

Davinci Resolve has the best time remapping right now. It can be done several ways but when you go beyond "change speed" and use optical flow then ramps can be keyframed and they work very well. Speed ramps in camera require a simultaneous iris ramp which does not always work as expected. I suppose a simultaneous shutter change might work but I suspect it would be apparent through shutter rate stepping vs. smooth iris changes.

I'm not into fcpx but I assume you've checked these tutorials?
