  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Sleepwalking In The Rift" - Anyone Know What This Was Shot On?

Darren Lew is the most talented DP working in "commercial" that I know of. Definitely looks like film to me. Perhaps I'm wrong, I admit I'm curious too, but that's not what made us both feel strongly about this piece when we found it. Rather than the camera body it is the careful exposure, the unpolished honesty, the way the lens feels like an extension of the guy's eyeball. Darren if you're out there, really, really, really, really well done man.

Looks like film cam here, but I've seen quite a few redusers achieving that kind of low-key look with R1, Epic and Scarlet, exposing carefully.

None of these can be mimicked on Red, Alexa, or any digital system. This is film. Film is part of the reason this has so many hits and likes. Point an MX at that low sun and tell me what the shadows look like, or the running figures if you flicked on HDR. Point an Alexa at the girl against the tree and tell me her skin will look anything like the kind, clear, rich image you see here. Nothing compares.

Every time someone says "film is dead," someone shoots something that could only be captured on film.

Also that photo of Fukunaga is labeled "Jane Eyre," I think they just posted it to give the director a face. Still I will retire tomorrow if this was shot anything but film.

To anyone reading this--what do you like about the film? Let's not just talk about the camera body :)

so beautiful....was wondering the same thing...although my first reaction was that it looked very digital to me, i would not be surprised if this was done on canon...the skin tones look (canon) digital to me....and the saturation (and HDR "feel") of those sunset shots look a little strange to me....but what do i know
i guess this is part of a total of 30 min series of short vignettes (IMDB)....the whole thing is a promo for a design brand...

It was shot on 2 Canon 5D (or 5D and 7D ( not sure )
Cary and Darren are true artists , i believe they can shoot poetry even with an Iphone ...
It has been true pleasure working with them .

And that is only the Trailer , in the 30 min piece ( a short story divided in 8 vignettes) there are breathtaking images ... not sure when it will be released tough ...

Except of course for the things shot on the Canon 5D...right?

hahaha sorry everyone, I will boil my shoe and eat if tomorrow! that is a stand up fantastic rendering of color and texture no matter what it was shot on. brandon I hope I didn't upset you too much there if this was indeed 5D I will eat both shoes!

I am so embarrassed to admit this is not the first time I've been fooled. I met a director after seeing a screening of his hybrid documentary, parts of which I was sure were shot on film! we talked about the story and his process and eventually I asked if he remembered what stock they shot on and he answered "oh no we had a really great flame artist!"

****ing 3D LUTs. fooling me every time. I feel guilty for distracting this conversation when we should be talking about why this 'film' makes us all react this way. is it not just a man and a woman in a an "other" place in nice clothes and nice light? somehow it is more than that, what makes that transformation happen? is terrence malick's return just making us all shoot on nice rectilinear ultra wides as white people frolick in foreign fields? why are we all concerned?

once again, forgive me talking out my ass. i should read my own damn signature!

It is indeed a great piece , and it is special because the way has been shot and because of it's Vision .

But no 3D luts has been used on this one ... Film emulation luts kind of works sometimes but i think they limit the color work ... i never use them , manually manipulate the Color palette is much much better , gives you much more choices and the result is much more sophisticated (digital cameras (especially compressed formats such as 5D have limitations and 3D luts in many cases does not suit the characteristics of the shot )
