  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This may have been discussed before, but the Red One desperately needs a sleep mode. I spent Saturday running around town doing pickup shots. It became frustrating having to boot the camera each time we jumped out of the van to get a shot. It makes it difficult to be spontaneous... I would have a hard time shooting a documentary on a Red. Cinematographers have become accustomed to running the camera at a moments notice. A sleep mode would go a long way to accommodate this.

(much) shorter boot up time..

(much) shorter boot up time..

..... or a (much) shorter boot time.

..has been ruled out by Jim himself, I think. So, for us going Red for documentary use, all our hopes lie in a sleep mode, it seems. I can't figure the Red team missing the issue... That makes me confident. Yet, seeing my number coming up with no word of hope from Red for the near future makes me nervous, too ! I tend to think there must be some technical reason why this apparently basic feature has not been implemented from the beginning. The fact is we have not been given any clue... I'd like a clue...

Yes Please! Can anyone from RED comment on this? I know Jarred and Stuart have made reference that it "may" be on the list... can anyone confirm. For wildlife docs it is greatly needed. Can anyone in the know just give confirmation that you will be working on it?

Sleep mode throuh battery changes is the single most asked for feature after "black sun solution".

My guess is that it will not come in the RED ONE, but maybe in the RED TWO.

It would take an internal "temporal" battery into the design, and AFAIK it's not there.
I would love to be proven wrong about this :)

What about some sort of buffer or capacitor inline on the power cable, or a smallish box with a male and female Lemo that attached to the rear of the camera? You'd get 30 seconds to pull one battery and pop on another.
Kinda disappointing that this was not better considered in the early stages of design. I was on a D-20 job last week. Camera boot up time: 14 seconds ready to shoot. Sony DR deck boot up time: 9 seconds.
Just sayin...

We hear the stated need for this feature and it is on our to-do list. Don't have an ETA as of yet.

just my thoughts... I'd guess internally the Red is an embedded PC with various custom hardware. Sleep modes are common in many types of equipment, so individual chips and peripheral subsystems often have this capability as an option. But if it is not designed-in from the beginning at the system level, it can be quite an involved process to get sleep and restore working right!

Anyone who's put linux on a laptop can probably tell you, one of the last things they get working (if they do) is probably the sleep mode. In fact, I put an NVidia card in my generic WinXP PC to run Redcine, and sure enough, the sleep mode no longer works. Even after several driver updates.

In other words, this one may take a while.

Eta ?

Eta ?

I just wonder what an ETA is... can anyone help me out ??

I got an answer from Jim himself to one of my post, reading approximately : "can't you wait until the feature is enabled". Red's great : I shall wait, no problem.. just postpone my projects. As stressed previously, who wants to consider such a big money/time investment as required by wildlife shooting, if there is no sleep mode and if the very shot that is badly needed might be missed because the camera might be booting up the wrong moment.

Trouble is not that we have to wait, I think. Red's "worth the wait", we all know that. Trouble is that we have no clear confirmation as to the feasibility of a sleep mode on Red ONE, and that the lack of what may seem a basic feature in any camera (and a deal-breaking issue for some of us), arises questions and doubts when it comes to the decision to go now for red one.. or wait for red... two.

On the other and, this seemingly "basic" feature may well not be a priority at all, if the requirements of the 35 mm film replacement market for high-end stage shots has to be met first. In that case, concentrating - as so it seems - on issues like multiple outputs or image quality enhancement does make better sense, I guess. And so does the delay for a sleep mode.

I just wish we had a clear, official statement posted by red team, explaining, i.e : summing up the state of the question in terms of market priority, technical feasibility (and estimated delay if the feature can actually be enabled on red one).

i second that a sleep mode would be very handy, especially for documentary work or 2n unit pick up shots.

but i assume it will take time to happen, so until then i will try the swap pack:

any news on that? has any one tried it so far?

but i also like harry's idea ;-)
