  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I (and other folks like Mark L Pederson) think that STH looks vastly better. Sooo... there's NO WAY we can get that built in on a RAVEN, can we? Or perhaps go back to the old method of a 1/4 CTB, or an IR cut? Don't think it'll have the same magic though...

DRAGON STANDARD is disappointing to me based on Phil's tests - it seems to look mostly the same as LLO, which looks like a mush of bad color to me and which takes extreme grading skill and effort to get right in my opinion.

Of course, everyone's needs and shooting / lighting conditions are different so I'm sure there will be some who disagree!

I like the STH the most, no doubt. But i also see the advantages of STD (and LLO) and why RED did go with STD for RAVEN, it makes sense. I think it's closer to STH than to LLO. LLO is vastly different and a more specialized OLPF in my eyes, not worse, but nothing i would put on my Scarlet otherwise than needed. STH on the other hand eats more light, something lots of people are complaining about. That gets more important with the lack of 5k/6k on RAVEN. STD is the right OLPF.

Going with STH would close the door while with STD we can experiment with some additional filtering to get closer to STH. I think that's possible. Maybe Kippertie or RED could do a special screw-on filter?

I thought so too... but have you seen Phil's video? It seems like 75% LLO look, 25% STH look. Which was a surprise to me.

While I prefer the color rendition and cleanliness of the STH OLPF, it does eat light. Not to be dismissive of Raven buyers, some of whom are likely far more talented than I, but, typically a lower cost camera gets used on lower budget productions which means less lighting resources. IMHO, the STD is the logical OLPF for most Raven shoots based purely on the projected user base.

I guess so. Might have to count me out then.

STH just looks so similar to LLO that I personally think some DSLRs may have better colors. I know the F35 I use now does - and after some tests I have to say the a7r MkII is pretty frikkin' good! Looks better than LLO to me.

The colors on LLO are just not fun enough for me to bother with all of the hoopla and expense of RED.

So I'm guessing I'll now move towards an A7rII / A7sII - and rent a camera with DRAGON Skin Tone Highlights when needed.

The really fun one will be the Ursa Mini 4.6k. No idea about the color rendition there but the original Blackmagic cam with the previous-gen Fairchild sensor was promising and looked decent-ish (once you filtered out the massive IR contamination).

Darn it, I was all excited to finally go RED!

Perhaps the path forward is to see if RED would be willing to install your OLPF of choice, with the caveat that you may be essentially "stuck" with it. No idea if that's practical, due to the physical dimensions of the OLPF frame in front of the smaller sensor and whether the Raven hardware/firmware could handle a different OLPF decode type than the STD it's designed for.

BTW, if you ever need a RED Bruce, ping me and if it's not working that day it's all yours my friend.

Two more options - Canon or PL, which is more essential :)
 
Is STD reds official abbreviation for standard olpf?
 
I think being able to choose which OLPF you would want would be fantastic. Not holding my breath for it though.
 
Ha, yeah, but STD is an abbreviation for something completely different as well... I think that's why Brian was double checking.

No. I want a regular version and a monochrome version. Then I would buy an extra brain just to have a purely monochrome Raven when needed! That would be amazing.

MONOCHROME RAVEN. I like that. A lot. But I can't help but imagine what 8K Monochrome will look like. OMG I wanna see it.
 
According to Brent, the Dragon standard OLPF is the only one they will offer. While I have no specific knowledge of the manufacturing process, it's not hard to imagine that adding that option is problematic in terms of cost, time to market or both. Perhaps over the next few months Graeme will manage to finesse even better color out of the STD that we see today, it is after all, the newest OLPF on RED's block...

Low-pass filter worms...ugh...that would necessitate additional high-pass worm filter. HPWF.
