  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Single Chip 2/3 cameras?

One of my thoughts was to use some of the new Canon HJ glass may be HJ11 and HJ22 for 3D work mainly as they have inbuilt servos and may avoid external motors. What Im not sure about is how well they do track. One friend mentioned that are OK zooming of going from one wide to tight but some times lost lock if changing direction.

Might be better off with a couple of fixed Scarlets for 3D. Range will be about the same as the HJ11, though a bit longer and around 7mm on the wide end. You could probably buy two fixed Scarlet brains with wide and tele extenders, and two interchangeable brains with full sets of mini-primes for the price of a pair of HJ11's with digital servos.

People make it seem like if you don't buy $80.000 sets of primes, the footage will nearly be SD. Cheer up people :)

Could well be a good move if the lenses track.

16mm lens on Scarlet.

16mm lens on Scarlet.

Most of the 16mm lens especially the newer super 16 calibrated ones are more than adequate to handle the resolution. The super 16 frame area is slightly larger than 2/3 inch CCD/CMOS sensor this makes them ideal. The only obstacle is getting adaptors.I have a fairly recent (2004) EL super 16 Bolex with a 14.5 -115 mm zoom.
It's as sharp as Zeiss zooms from a Arri super 16 I shot and viewed on a telecine side by side.
Being a single 2/3 inch sensor tells me it will be considerably more light sensitive than a triple sensor. This is because there is no prism splitting the light to give to each sensor.
The only thing I would ask camera manufacturers to change is to make Global Shutters for their CMOS sensored cameras.I believe Weisscam have done this with their camera.Otherwise I am grabbing my CCD HD cam for action shots so as not to get that awful wobble and skewing in the pictures.
