Since Red is dropping 2/3”, please give us a 2.5K mode on Red One, Epic & Scarlet!
I know this has been requested before, but in light of Scarlet’s move to a 35mm sensor, I believe it is more important then ever to offer a cropped 2.5K 16x9 mode on Red One, Epic and Scarlet (2560x1440, or whatever the smallest size is that will yield HD resolution after debayering). Why?
1) to be able to shoot at the highest possible frame rate that still resolves to HD after debayering.
2) to allow the use of Super 16 zooms for verité style live action shooting in HD
3) to give the best possible reach for long lens shooting, while maintaining 1080p resolution
I believe that 4K is the future of cinema, but HD is still a huge part of our world today. The ability to crop the sensor to the minimum required for HD resolution would make the cameras more versatile by giving us new lens and frame rate options. Many of my clients love Red for set-up stuff, but dislike it for fast changing live action shooting because of the lensing requirements of the 4K sensor. While 2K is not quite good enough for HD work, most of my Super 16 lenses cover substantially more than the 2K area. Cropping from 3K in post is cumbersome and not realistic for hand off to a client. Now that adding a 3K 2/3” brain to my kit is no longer an option, having a 2.5K mode would make all of Red’s cameras a lot more versatile when shooting for the HD world. Anyone else agree? (And as always, thanks for listening Red!)
