I posed the question over at DVXuser...but then thought, duh, I should definitely try for some advice here, given that so many of you are well versed in the HD world.

I have a software only Avid Media Composer suite, on a PC with an nVidia Quadro FX 3450 card (comes with two DVI outs). I was planning to simply "plug in" a high-resolution LCD monitor (1920x1200) about the time when Red arrived, so that I could monitor my Redcode footage at 1080p. But when I started looking into things online, it became apparent that things might be bit more complex than simple "plug and play." Or is it?

There's a product from Blackmagic (the HDLink Pro) that converts SDI video directly to any supported DVI-D based LCD computer monitor. Would such a unit allow my Avid Media Composer+nVidia card to give me 1080p monitoring on an external LCD?

Failing that, am I stuck with buying a Mojo SDI?

Just looking for the simplest (and cheapest) way to get my home Avid system to monitor HD. Any advice appreciated.

Use Full Screen Playback. Find it in the Toolsets Menu or press Ctrl + Shift + F. Full res if you enable green/green in video quality.
Check out this thread for 2 edit monitors + a full screen client monitor: Avid Community thread

Mojo is standard definition only but you can monitor downconverted 1080p/i

It works OK, the Component output is good.
The S-video out has never looked very good.
I have been on the Matrox forum and tried
to find the best set-up.
I use it to output my HD timeline from
my laptop to either make BetaSP dubs
or DVD's made direct to my DVD recorder.

Um what makes you think you'll be able to play redcode footage in avid ? There is no cheap way for media composer to display true HD. Mojo is SD only.

Yeah, currently there is not true 1080p monitoring out of Avid. You'll have to go to a Nitris suite for that. Avid doesn't send a true 1080p signal out for monitoring so there is no hardware to buy (unless less than accurate theoretical upres software ) that will get you (non-downconverted) 1080p monitoring, especially if you want to grade the footage.

I mentioned this to you before you bought it though, Sean. As a cat who wants to buy Avid, i hope they change their tune, but i don't think they want to challenge their Nitris suites for that.

:meh:

i start to remember there is a hardware solution by matrox which allows HD preview?

i don't have any hands on experience on this tool.

AFAIK this tool is based on Quicktime overlay architecture. Then it works ok (or better: excellent) for a real cool HD-SDI output. E.g. After Effects, FCP, even Photoshop might work.
But Avid uses no QT playback/overlay (while it does for import/output). It has a compete own window architecture. So, I doubt the MXO would work with Avid. For a proper uncompressed output I think you need Avids hardware. The same old story with them.

You can set your secondary monitor up for full screen playback. Just use the settings described in the previous post. It will give you 1080 playback to the LCD monitor hooked up as a secondary. I think the Quadro is a bit of overkill for that though, when you could use a 7900 and DVI to a 24 inch Dell and get quite a good preview solution. This is really the only solution to preview hd footage from the Avid without and Adrenaline box. It works though. Now if we can get Redcine, we can transcode to DNxHD and edit.

Chris

Has anyone tried to transcode Red footage to DNxHD from Redalert on a Mac and then import it to a Mac Avid setup? I'm all pc here.
