  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Silly questions from a Canon HV20 owner

Hey folks!

Ive owned a Canon HV20 now for approaching 3 years. Its great, small, lightweight, was fairly cheap and has lasted me well but time marches on and after watching with interest the RED launch of One and the announcments thereafter I have a few questions that are probably very stupid :)

1. What is the low light ability likely to be like with the Scarlet? I read somewhere the Red One is rated at ISO 320 - does that equate to phenominal low light performance, far exceeding the HV20, XH-A1 and other such cameras? I shoot in nightclubs and run with a shutter of 1/25 to get the max amount of ambient light with the least amount of grain possible.

2. Is the Scarlet (fixed lens) an autofocus system? Another silly questions but I hadnt spotted if it was or not in other posts and on the previews.

I really hope my HV20 lasts out until the Scarlet hits the street, having seen the middle ground attempts of the D90 and 5DMk2 Im putting my faith in Mr Oakley and co this year :D

Thanks guys,

Rikki

Check back in 6-9 months when the camera is released.

6-9 months would surprise me.
Everything from Red is great.
Nothing is on time... 8)
but, who knows what will be announced tomorrow from the Reduser party

Lots of info

Lots of info

Have a look at the footage of Jarred's pet dog Izzy in Recon to get an idea of the sensor's S/N ratio. The noise in the moving image looks to be only in the luma channel and quite digital, that with the fact it is completely missing from the still that is posted leads me to believe it is either some early (and to be corrected) de-bayer pattern or (more likely) compression artefacts from the H.264 encode for the web.

The Scarlet 2/3" fixed will apparently have a kick ass electronic lens with some kind of new system to give better focus/iris/zoom control than on cameras like the HVX200. Who knows exactly what the Red team have up there sleeve though. It will also be T2.8 or better though the zoom range so will be much much better as you zoom in than on HV20, although as you know as far as low-light goes the HV20 and it's flash drive brother the HF10 seriously punch above their weight.

Scarlet 2/3" fixed went through some pretty considerable user-focused development over on Scalretuser.com and when it came to the big round of changes before Christmas we all ended up getting our wish. So those of us who loved the original Scarlet idea can get that, those who want interchangeable lenses on the 2/3" can get that and those who want S35 or FF35 are good too. We even wished it would be modular (although that one came up after the news that there would be some kind of change came about). The only people who did not get there wish were the guys lobbying for Scarlet to be a micro 4/3" system.

Check out the threads over there for more info. It's all a little up in the air again until Wednesday though.

Hey, I'm still holding out for at least a 4/3rds micro lens mount to show up at some point. Be great for 3k on an FF35.:sifone:

Fall '09 was the original target last year - before the first change in specs - now there's been a second change in specs. All good stuff but - I wouldn't expect to see the Scarlet ship until Q1-Q2 2010 unfortunately (speculation of course).

HV20's ISO rating is somewhere between 100 and 200 ISO. At ISO 320, the nominal sensitivity of Red One is about twice as high as with HV20.

But there's more to it than that: you can use Red One with much higher ISO settings, and still get acceptable quality - like adding gain in HV20, but with much less noise and other image quality loss.

Red One should work rather well at nightclubs with available light (haven't tried that personally though).

Yep, it does, according to currently available specs.

Panasonic is releasing in few days time the Lumix GH1 camera that is enabled to shoot HD video (1920x1080p) at 25 or 30fps.

The sensor size is 4/3 (~13x18mm) not much smaller than Red One, and due to larger photosites (~5µm), probably will have some decent low light performance.

Some dudes managed to mount old 16mm C mount, fast and very fast lenses (f0.95) on it, with pretty amazing results.

This is the first GH1 user-video I've seen :

Focus! Focus!

OK, it's a good demo of the camera, and shallow DOF effects.

But it also shows that either the cameraman has to be an expert at focusing, or that auto-focus (continuous in some cases) has to be very fast and accurate. The actual delay in focusing, overshooting and then settling into not-quite-in-focus [the dog] got to be irritating after the first minute.

There was only one fast-pan (at about 2 minutes, just after the first lens change). There weren't any glaring 'jello' rolling-shutter effects, but I'm sure that movie experts will be harder to please.

Note : the original Pana ('soybean' -- search forum) examples were all tripod-mounted with no, or slow panning.

Actually, with the current and announced adaptors for 4/3 and micro 4/3
eg http://www.dpreview.com/news/0904/09042401cosinaadapter.asp
combined with sensor-shift stabilization and live view, the [m]4/3 range is one of the best platforms for vintage lenses. (And the crop factor is an advantage, discarding the cr*ppy edge effect of the old lenses).

Gotta update my profile -- my E300's shutter died at about 42,000 actuations. I think it was rated for 30,000.

I concur. I've been playing with an HF100 (like the HF10, sans the internal flash and the paint job) since last year, and if you switch it to Cinema mode (low gain, essentially) instead of Program mode, it's pretty amazing in low light for a $600 camera, a lot of the nasty noise is gone. I thought even the compression artifacts look better in Cine mode - this might be real actually, not just a subjective impression, I guess the codec has less work to do due to lower noise. Anyway, even if you're just filming weddings and kids at the playground, you're still missing out if you own a camera like this and you're not using the Cinema mode. May as well use the Neutral "digital effect" too, while you're at it (silly marketing speak, it's not an "effect" it's just lower saturation).

Default setting (Program mode) is awful, as usual for any camera in this price range.

Also, they shot "Crank 2: High Voltage" with Jason Statham on XH-A1 and a bunch of HF10 in Cinema mode with 24fps. Not bad credentials for this kind of camera.

But Scarlet will be in a totally different realm. I'm not sure you can make any sort of comparison between it and the HF10/100's or the HV20's.
