  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Silky smooth credit rolls in After Effects

BTW, making sure the text isn't 100% white is a good move, I don't remember if I set it it up that way but it should be at like 75%

I think you can safely do 90%, but when I get a giant "screen full o' logos" (Dolby, Panavision, Technicolor, etc.), I tend to drop the overall luminance level by another 7%-8% if I have control of the titles during color correction.

Sometimes, aliasing/motion artifact issues in credit crawls are due to title size, typeface choice, contrast, and/or crawl speed. Adjust one or more of these by hand, and you might be able to come up with a workable compromise.

I don't see what you describe onscreen in AEFX or rendered to ProRes422HQ via BM Decklink & BM Media Express. Are you monitoring in true P or Psf? Do you see "vibration" on a paused frame?

Hope I've been helpful!

Yes, we've setup both 24psf and 24p projects, it displays the same way in both projects.

We're watching it on a EIZO Color Edge CG241W (Good Monitor) we've also watched it on a PENTA broadcast monitor, playing back from a HP Z800 Flame Station with RAID(ed) storage over Fibre Channel.

The movement of the text is smooth, it is animating at a consistent "pixel per second" ratio, so the movement of the text is completely smooth, however what we see is the "chatter" or "vibration" that occurs when the text moves from one position to the next.

We have tried just about everything to resolve this, the only thing that we can attribute this remaining "chatter" to, is that the text is moving faster than it usually would, at (approx) 4pixels per frame. When, they usually move at 2pixels per frame.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this, any other suggestions are welcome...

If when you scrub through frame by frame and its NOT visible I would say it must be something within the monitor chain. My guess since both P and PsF have been tried is possibly the refresh rates on the displays. At 4px/sec you might be approaching angle of pan for 23.976p, meaning it begins to break motion approximation on human visual tracking. See any 24p footage when they pan fast enough to track objects but not fast enough to completely break motion illusion.

See if your monitors allow you to alter refresh rates. Common ones are 24, 50, 60, 120, & 240Hz. I would expect it might vanish at 60Hz and above. If your project is destined for the big screen and subsequent DVD/BluRay distribution I would consider not making the text move so fast anyways because not everyone (read: no one) will bother to adjust Hz on their display for your movie.

I also just noticed your fame size was listed as "1998x1080" which is not standard HD. Somewhere in the chain a processing scaler might be "normalizing" your signal with ill effects to motion. Was this a typo or is your resolution actually this size? I know I included several off standard frame sizes within the project but none of them effect width, only height to accommodate aspect ratios.

The last thing I can think is the credit comp size. Sometimes AEFX throws some serious shitcakes out on extremely large nested comps. I've never had visual artifacts but rather error codes within the software prior to render. You could try breaking it into smaller vertical chunks and see if that effects the outcome.

That's awesome. Thx for your post, Michael! My 4k credit roll is way too slow at a value of "2" tho. Is it possible to increase this up to 8 or 10 with the roll still being smooth? Or should I do something totally different to speed up the credits?

No worries!

That would be the right way to do it. I would always use multiples of two to get consistent results. Never use less than a whole number. Do your own renders to verify the speed and quality are on point with your settings.

Best luck.

It's all looking good in AE so far, thx again! I will have a professional DCP conversion later and crosscheck that credit on a big screen :)

Thank you so very very much for this Michael. This is a gigantic help. This is a great gift...thank you thank you thank you.

One added tip:
I set up all my text in a photoshop file. Once I got it looking perfect I copy/pasted it into the AE project and all the formatting went with it. Not essential, but helpful.

Good deal. Glad it helped you out!

Also works to lay out the text in Illustrator and paste to AE. I love Adobe!

Although there may be a way to do that with an expression, I don't profess to be that much of an expert :( I have had to have the last line hang in the center of the screen for a dedication and that was accomplished with speed remapping - which actually worked much to my surprise! Remember, the expression creates a constant motion event. If you had it slow down, the entire NULL would slow from its start to the end, essentially creeping your whole credit roll ever slower until it stopped moving. That might be strange to see in practice. If you do sort it out, please include your solution so others can learn from it. Best!

Great share! Thank you Michael! Will try it out on the next job :)

I recently launched a new version of my website www.strawberrycolor.com and it has been brought to my attention that the link to the credit roller has since been broken. Sorry! The link is now updated to reflect the new location of the file. Download away!

Nice work Michael! Thanks for doing this, just gave a really useful tool to the community. Anyone who's worked with titles and credits in AE knows how handy this really is.
My rusty math brain is wondering if changing frame rates (to PAL @25fps) will have any impact on the strobing fix?

Thanks again,
Kris
