  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sigma Cinema Lenses

Focusing SIGMA EF, and Canon EF lenses via RTmotion handset + POE was Extremely Usable in pro situations for me - however the Side handle focusing method does not have the smoothness or reliability required for pro use (as of this writing) probably just some firmware away from being usable... I think it comes down to Method - i.e. brute force motor commands vs check and move...
well i havent tried the rtmotion set up, so that's good!
ive had no luck with fool control and ive really tried, great for on/off and setting though!
but back on track, someones got to talk to sigma, im afraid they wont even produce any more cinema housed lenses in the future because sales are not going to be that great with these prices!

Hey Dan,
Do you notice IRIS delay when pulling focus wheel AND Iris slider at the same time with Rtmotion hand controller using EF lenses?
I have raised this issue in a separate thread but nobody has posted anything. So not sure if something is wrong with my unit.

Not very smooth. Sure you can use it, but not to pull focus while rolling lol.
Probably the part I'm least excited about on the new handle. I'm a manual kinda guy anyhow.

That's really useful feedback, thank you.

I was considering one because of the electronic focus but was unsure whether the lenses themselves would work that well with it - photo lenses have stepper motors in and i tested a sigma 24-35 using rack focus and found the pull quite jittery.

I think one day this will be the way forward but i also think it could be very lens dependent. A lens with a cine style motor in could work really well.

May i ask which lenses you've tried with it?

cheers
Paul

Using the RTmotion handset with the omod POE the EF arts work buttery smoothe (from a focus standpoint)

Haven't noticed an issue with the iris and focus together in a compound move, is there a way to "calibrate" the iris axis? I'm away from the gear for a bit so I can't test right away, but I don't know if you can get a "continuous" iris pull anyway because the iris will always be "clicky" - except on certain Nikon lenses where I think Red actually provides the motor in the mount which will give smoothe iris ramps.

I'll let you know what I find when I get back to my gear!

RTmotion has a stand alone system for the EF focus control with their latitude sidekick, have you tired this system to see how smooth it is?

RTmotion also has a non-wireless plug in "smart knob", .. I wonder how smooth or useful this is with EF VS the totally NOT usable focus on the side handle???

I am not aware you can calibrate iris and rtmotion did not mention anything, so I guess no.
Well, if I pull iris only, it is very smooth going by 1/10 of a stop. With some practice you can get very smooth iris pull a la manual.
When doing both at the same time (focus and iris), iris is delayed.

The folks from Rtmition told me they do not have this problem with their Scarlet-W. So I am not sure if it is Epic-W related.

If you can test again and let me/us know it would be very helpful.

Chrostoffer - could you explain me please why CineAltas aren't good for Dragon 6K?
I'm just about to invest in set of 6 primes + Sony SCL 11-16

The image circle for the CineAlta lenses are set for S35 and not full frame. So, at max 6K sensor area - I assume you'll see vingetting.

Have heard a variety of opinions on coverage of Cinealtas at 6K open gate.

Heard 20 is good, maybe minor portholing at 25... hoping to try some myself soon.

Certainly the sigmas are faster and more "future format" proof...

Lots to consider including pricing...

I know where to get cinealtas dirt cheap if anyone wants to pm me

Hey Dan, we talked at Digital Film Studios this past Tuesday. If you ever want to test out my CineAltas, just hit me up.

As for my set, the 20mm portholes at 6K Dragon, but clears up at 5.5K. It also portholes at 8K Helium, but I believe it clears at 7.5K. I'll have to test it more thoroughly on the Helium, as I tossed it on during a quick session with the new camera but didn't have too much time to explore in depth.

My CineAltas, on the other hand, all cover 6K, just with minimum darkening of the corners on the 20mm. Perfect at 6K HD or 6K WS.

Has there been any pricing on the Primes yet? Or when they are available? Seems like they announced the primes and then went dark.

I know the Zooms have prices, but I'm more interested in the primes.

Thanks

From the original SIGMA press release:

Furthermore, another zoom lens and five prime lenses will be released to the market in sequence from 2017 onward. SIGMA plans to develop additional zoom and prime lenses as well as add support for PL mount camera systems. The latest release information will be sequentially updated on its official website.

Delivery: toward the end of 2016 (in Japan and USA in the first phase)
Price: TBD
Mount: Initially Canon-EF and Sony-E to be followed later by PL.
*24-35mm T2.2 FF is not available in PL mount.
