  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art???

I have it, will not give it back. :) Sorry, don't have RED footage to share yet.
Deon is right. Just buy it, you will not regret it. This lens is awesome, like the 18-35/1.8 and 35/1.4 from Sigma's ART series.

It's pretty damn close to Zeiss' Otus and considering the price-point, the included AF and the availability of more lenses that match the look, its probably overall the better choice. As much as i love my Otus, i have to admit that.

So it's easy to say, this one is the currently best 50mm stills lens.

Sounds great, Maik. Would you mind to share how much this lens shows "breathing" while executing a rack-focus?

The breathing is clearly visible, you better avoid longer focus-racks. I don't think its better or worse than the Canon 50/1.2.
BTW, Otus breathes too, a little less.

Why did you get an Otus and the ART 50mm?
Just out of interest :)
I guess i really like that focal length. :)

Well, i bought Otus when Sigma's 50 wasn't in sight. I love the Otus on my RED, manual focusing is great for film. But i miss the AF for stills with my DSLR. And when Sigma claimed to deliver Otus-performance for ~900€, with AF, i had to try it.

Now i'm keeping it, because i like it more than Canon's 50/1.2 on my 5d. And when it comes to shooting with RED, i do really like the idea of having matching lenses. Sigma has already that 18-35, a 35/1.4 and now the 50/1.4. And more are coming, probably faster than more Otus lenses will arrive.

Otus is the luxurity 55mm lens, my(!) real "cine" lens, especially the focus pulling is much more fun with it. But that might be getting less important when those REDLINK-EFF-solutions are available.

So, here it is. I'm not sure about buying the next Otus lenses and might even think about selling the 55mm, thanks to SIGMA's ART primes and REDLINK-EFF.

I haven't used the 50mm but based on my experience with the 18-35 and the raging reviews...
Just buy it.
You won't be sorry ;)

D

Good luck buying it...it's been out of stock for several months virtually everywhere.... I pre ordered mine and still waiting on it!

Thank you!

Now only if we could get support for the Nikon mount Sigma art line lenses...After seeing this post and namely how he was able to control the focus REDLINK-EFF..

I was on my way to the RED store NYC when it hit me, "There's no Offical/proper support for this lens (Sigma 18-35) I don't have full control of it, not completely over the iris and none of the focus!!:banghead:

Give me a list of what you want supported.

Small side note - unless you have an external motor running the zoom, you won't have any "electronic zoom" support in these lenses since there is literally no built in motor to drive zooming...

Noted, of course you do (need and external motor) I guess I threw out all reason and didn't even think when Santa told me to make my list :001_huh:
