  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sigma 20mm f/1.4 coming

665 is fine on a ronin I can assure you. I did a whole feature where they used a mini s4 18mm nearly every day. Don't know the exact weight but it weighed way more than 665 grms for sure. Handled it no problems.

18mm/1.4 would make more sense. This 20/1.4 is too close to the 24/1.4. They will cannibalize each other.

I'm hoping they're just trying to perfect that 85/1.4 that most of us are waiting for.

Yup, sure looks like it. No filters... hmmm

Did you guys know about the metal lens cap? (sold separately) Makes me wonder what the standard cap looks like.
Probably all because of the big front element
That lens-cap is a little weird. Looks like they learned the hard way their standard-cap doesn't give enough protection and now they quickly made a metal one but don't want to repackage the stock? Strange move, this should be included.

This lens looks pretty awesome. It's another groundbreaking lens in the ART line for a nice price.

Wide-Angles are just somewhat boring in the ART line now (and for me not the lenses i use most). Lots of choices here now, especially if you count the 18-35 too. It looks like SIGMA had put some great development efforts into Wide-Angles and came up with a few interesting designs. Now they throw out "everything", one after each other. ;) Bad thing about this is, nearly all of them make sense and are great performers.

20mm is much wider than 24mm. I don't think they're too close. Don't be fooled by the plain numbers. 20mm on gimbal sounds damn cool, yup, thats where i see it too (if i ever receive my Beast, lol).

I will not bet on SIGMAs next prime. Wouldn't be surprised if it's another Wide-Angle. 16mm? ;) I really hope for a 85 and then 135, maybe 100. Odd things would be nice too, 45mm, 70mm? But i think that's where on of their variable primes will fit in sooner or later.

Basically any Sigma ART lens is welcome in my kit, still holding out hope for that rumored 24-70 F2!
No more rumours about that one. I think the 24-35/2 shows what is to expect from zooms with wider than 2.8 aperture. Maybe a 35-50 or 35-70 is next?

Might be a bit easier to do it as it is not wide angle like the 24-35 f/2 is, so perhaps a 35-85 f/2 could be done! ;-) An even sweeter pairing. Bring those two, plus (to cover the extra wide, and extra long ends) the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 (or Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8, if it has to be 135 format coverage) and Mitakon 135mm f/1.4 (on second thoughts... just looked up its cost! OMG. Let's swap that out for the Mitakon 135mm f/2.8 instead at a fifteenth of the cost! :-o Or a Nikon 135mm f/2.8 for less than a hundred bucks), and you could have all you need on (most) shoots!

Though as an APS-C / Super 35mm shooter, I'd be even happier if Sigma updated their old 50-150mm f/2.8 lens (one I own and use myself), perhaps to be a 50-135mm f/2 lens? ;)

Yes, revisiting that 50-150 would be something.

I really would love to know what they have planned next for their variable prime line. :) I'm currently holding back on the 24-35/2, but would buy that one too, if the next is something that starts at 35. I hope they prioritize the performance and not the higher number on the longer end and keep it f2. Those things are great for traveling light and it's also nice to have a backup-lens with close-to-prime performance. I hope for a set of three to cover the basic range of 24-135 at f2. Everything else would be a bonus to me.

I'm not a huge fan of Tokina (and super-ultra-wide) and have yet to see a lens from Mitakon that makes me want to buy it. The 135 looks like an impressive piece of glass, but the price, the samples and the limitation to 100? Nope. You don't get me with that. My choice will be the 135/2 Zeiss. I hope for a Milvus-version, but would even more love to hear about an Otus or ART.

+1 on the 50-150mm sigma
i think it has come down to the 18-35mm art for me, its wide, fast, sharp and some are saying its pretty much parafocal. plus through research the canon 16-35mm is not sharp at all.
i have to say i was looking into way more expensive options like an optimo, but given that the raven really benefits from the electronic communication from the lens mount to the brain of the raven, it just makes sense. i would love a 50-150mm art so that i could have a nice matching set and i could sell my canon 70-200mm.

The 18-35/1.8 is a killer-lens and it's a fantastic option for RAVEN. I'm glad i've kept mine (thought about selling it, when the 24-35 came out).
I would like to see another APS-C optimized ART-zoom with 1.8 aperture, starting at 35. Well, simply a sibling to the 18-35. Perfect for RAVEN. ;) Add the Optitron2 to the mix and it's a great kit.

BTW, the Canon 16-35/4IS is sharp, but 4.0. ;)

So the first hands on are out. The hood is fixed and filters won't work of course is confirmed.
That also explains the bucket like lens cap.

Disappointing but not a deal breaker. Motion mount or a decent matte box get around this, it would have been nice to have the screw on ability for gimbal work. All the more reason to rehouse this puppy!

Thanks. Yup, special lens, but no deal-breakers so far.

I played with this Friday (on a Canon body) at the Photoplus show in NYC, It was very solid feeling, and form a few simple tests I could do at the booth it seemed to perform very well. I shot frames with tiny detail at 1.4 then zoomed in on the camera monitor and inspected for sharpness and blooming, I couldn't see any blooming and the sharpness was there. Still very unscientific but I pre-ordered one anyway. 20mm at 1.4 for $900 ish, or so i was quoted at the Sigma booth, I couldn't pass it up.

Here's a little test I did with the Sigma ART 20mm 1.4, I've been pretty impressed with this piece of kit especially considering the price. Make sure to watch in 4K

Looks pretty nice. Thanks for posting this Mark. Is this shot in 6kFF?
