I am contemplating forking over the cash for a side handle, but am curious about a few things:
1. If the camera is plugged into the wall or other power source, do you need a redvolt to work the side handle?
2. If the revolt is in the camera, will it be used if camera is also plugged into other power source?

Thanks for your time guys.

Redvolt is not necessary. It's an option. It will not be used if the camera is plugged in to another power source. It will be used if there is no other power source for the camera. If you have the camera plugged in to a wall or battery mount, you do not need a RedVolt in the camera in order to utilize the side handle.

It's an option.

So far after two feature films I still haven't used the redvolts and the side handle just gets in the way.

If you like lots of shortcut keys and an extra record button, it's good to have. That's about all it does right now.

As long as you have a Touch LCD or a Redmote (Or both) and you use V-Lock or AB batteries with a plate, there's no need for a side handle (Oh and if you're not grabbing the camera like a DSLR since most of us have rigs anyway.)

Still, it's substantially faster to modify settings with the side handle.
