Is it possible to control camera solely off a side handle? Just using an sdi monitor for viewing.

Thx

I've done it with an HDMI monitor and side handle.

yes, the side handle can have complete control of the camera. You just need to make sure that the menus are visible on the sdi out.

You can. But the initial configuration needs a RED touchscreen. After that, if something goes wrong and you lose the menus you'll need that touchscreen again to reconfigure.

This question was asked a lot when the Scarlet first came out, as many folks were trying to get away with not buying a monitor. As much as I hate to admit it, the monitor is pretty necessary to keep the whole system running properly.

Actually you don't need a touch screen initially. RED have provided presets and tools here to reboot the camera with the desired functionality. Download the the DSMC Toolkit here:

I don't have a touch screen, I use Fool Control and my side handle together with the old 7" monitor. I don't like touch screen, especially when you shoot in cold harsh weather using gloves.

Cool, thanks for the info guys!

Fool Control is a cool app. Requires a wireless module for the camera right?

Yes. I guess this is true. You can probably get away with not using the touch screen on some level. I personally wouldn't advise as the system was designed around it, but to each their own.

I have always used a Side Handle with a non-touch RED monitor or Bomb EVF (only one cable, and you don't have the futz with 3rd party gack.) Is there a reason you're wanting to use an SDI monitor (just to stay non-proprietary)?

I agree that having a touch screen is highly recommended. I also highly recommend the 7".

I don't know.

I'm not as big on the 5" touch as everyone.

I went a whole year on my first Scarlet without a touchscreen and only the side handle. The nicest thing about the touch is the ability to scrub through clips during playback.

I'M the side handle is more of a must have than a touch, unless you are springing for the 7 or 9. The 5 is just too small.

Just my $0.02
