  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Side handle can now be ordered

No rush..prices won't go up till next year. Doesn't sound like there will be any big price difference in ordering individually or in a camera package. The package sounds like it is more out of convenience for ordering/shipping issues and such...although this quote is in specific reference to the Epic stages program.
Thats what i'm talking about though... I know we have NO idea about the Scarlets, they could be coming next week, next month, maybe even a year out. It's not to rush the purchase but to avoid the price increase in case we don't see the camera until 2012.

We all work differently, but I've got to say that the side handle is the single best optional piece available for the Epic IMO. I find that I drive the menus more using the side handle than I do using the touch screen or Redmote, and paired with the outrigger handle it makes handling the camera just feel right in your hands. With the volts it also provides a lighter weight power option.

It can be attached/removed super quick, no tools involved. It is just a completely kick ass piece of kit, highly recommended.

Even if the camera doesn't come out until next year, you still have four whole months to go before the price increases. I think that's why he's saying no rush. :)

Ordered mine, paid the deposit, then within a matter of hours, got the email asking for the remaining balance. Exciting stuff. I have never so easily handed over my money to anyone before. This, along with a battery, charger and CF card was my first ever purchase from RED.

I can understand why people want to put in their order to get a jump on accessories. Totally understand, given the history of things...

That said, I really hope RED ships out most of the key accessories and components that can be tied specifically to a single camera, namely the Canon / Nikon mounts, DSMC side handle, RedMote.. based on EPIC delivery date. It's definitely frustrating to have a camera waiting for bits and pieces on back order to complete your kit. It's infinitely more frustrating to be in that situation only to find out that some dude out there has the accessory you're waiting for, but he can only use it as a door stop or paperweight since he has no camera to attach it to.

...Just sayin'

This would make the most sense and actually, to be honest, i think that may be why they didnt have a buy now option really.

Though I understand your meaning, I doubt it's a real problem. If indeed it was, wouldn't RED make purchase of accessories at this point exclusive for EPIC owners only? With prodution ramping up(also with production of SCARLET in mind), recent backorder-situations will hopefully be a thing of the past - it just needs to! And with the confidence that RED is showing now, I believe it soon will be! ;)

Almost as frustrating as having to pay more for the same accessories, just because you didn't have enough money to buy the Epic in the first place and therefore 'settled' for a Scarlet.

Agreed. It's not so much getting the parts before anyone else (I could personally wait until the last minute before new year and make the purchase) - it's getting them before the announced price increase. Why should anyone wait in line where there is non? It's in the store, available for anyone to order. As much as I fully understand the price increase that RED must take, it's just impractical for everyone - no matter if you own an EPIC or if you are waiting for the SCARLET.

To one degree I sympathize with you, but to another they've already set a precedent (buy as soon as you can because it may be gone when you want it and then you're stuck waiting). People are already waiting 8 months or more for their Bomb EVF. The "massive shipment" of REDVOLTS came and went and there are still Epic-M owners that don't have them yet (according to the REDVOLT thread in Recon). The point is, if there's something you want, you just have to grab it.

Now I do realize that it makes sense to pair cameras with certain accessories (like you stated) so that when someone buys a brain, there is something to go along with it. But while it's one thing to keep track of singular Epic body serial numbers, it's another to be putting things like batteries aside and trying to line them up in order of original delivery date. I can only imagine what it's like down at RED with all of the interest surrounding the DSMC cameras.

My bigger concern is just that they'll be able to ramp up volume to match demand at all in a reasonable amount of time (and not cut QC operations in the process). As I mentioned, things like the Bomb EVF are backordered for months and months, and they haven't even started shipping Epic-Xs yet. What happens when that floodgate opens? Scarlet?

My advice to anyone who knows they'll be interested in getting the side handle is just to order it... there are only 4 months until the price on that thing nearly doubles anyway, so you might as well get in the queue when you can.

did you order it for a Scarlet Kyle?

It seems like they could strike a happy medium by honoring the date and time at which the order took place but, at the same time, giving weight to camera delivery status. That way you are rewarded accordingly for your early order and yet those who have camera in hand still are not waiting so long because of said "door stop".

If it worked that way, those that don't have a camera but just want to order before the price increase are still safe. Even if there's a back order that causes their item to be delivered next year, they've already submitted their order so they pay the old price.

As for keeping it all organized... That's what computers are for. :001_tongue:

You can never put a hard number on how many batteries or SSD cards are necessary per camera or anything like that, consumables should be sold as first-come, first-served. I know of several productions buying their own SSD media.

For the delivery date policy, that can be restrictive. I think it should only apply to specific components. Like the side handle... You can't use it without a camera, you shouldn't need to own more than one per camera. Don't really need a ton of Stage-3 guys plugging up the queue when Stage-2 people are trying to get a side handle and they just happened to order 5 minutes after a group of others that won't get their cameras for a while. No offense to the Stage-3 guys or others that may be implicated as further down the line... It's just the way it is.

Hopefully the production lines for side handles, etc.. can be ramped up alongside EPIC-X production. If it all can scale accordingly, this will ultimately be a non-issue.

Unfortunately Stuff has always been difficult to get hold of.

Luckily We got our REDvolts, and I ordered quite a few more. Theyve all arrived now.
Only issue we have is that we only have 1 travel charger for all the batteries!

Key with RED stuff is to buy now ask questions later.
Theres a good chance that even if you dont want it when your place in line comes, someone else will pay full price.

My fingers are crossed that i managed to get in line for the canon mount early enough!
