  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you are in a PAL (25fps- 50Hz) area what will be the best shutter speed for the following fps;

50fps=?
75fps=?
100fps=?
120fps=?

set the shutter mode to relative and then the shutter angle to 180 degrees. as a rule, 180 is considered normal.

Hi -Sorry, coming from ENG/HD background, and interested in this question. Can you give that to me in different language - fstops etc.

180-degree shutter angle, in shutter speed terms:
25fps: 1/50sec
50fps: 1/100sec
75fps: 1/150sec
100fps: 1/200sec
120fps: 1/240sec

Just to add a sidenote regarding PAL:

PAL is interlaced, meaning 50 fields a second are "projected" on the screen making 25 frames a second. Every projected field is different to the next following one. Now, if you want a pan beeing smooth without shuttering shoot 50 fps @ 1/50th second (360 degree shutter), put the footage on a interlaced PAL timeline in your NLE and set speed to 200%. Now you've got interlaced PAL Video.

This is not 25p anymore but 50i. There are many reasons for doing so, for instance pans of a pack range in a commercial.

The RedOne is very versatile.

Fully agree. Please bear in mind that 120fps/180degree/1/240sec will shutter in Pal-Land when using light sources that flicker with 50Hz.

sorry but i confused. I live in PAL-land that is why i am using 25 fps instead of 24p. But when i select 25 fps instead of 24 i ssume that it is progressive. But what does it mean "PAL is interlaced?"

Panauser,

when you are saying "PAL" most people assume you are talking "Standard Definition" - and Standard Definition PAL Video is 50i(nterlaced).

When you are shooting with the RED ONE you always shoot progressive and it can help in the postproduction workflow to shoot 25fps instead of 24fps.

Does this answer your question?

Yes you are shooting progressive with the RedOne. But PAL is 50 fields interlaced. Meaning that if you shoot 25 fps you create in Pal-Land two identical fields which represent one frame.

Nonetheless it's vital to understand that a smooth motion needs 50 fields. However, there are reasons to shoot 25p, for instance to mimic a filmstyle look which comes from 25p telecice.

24 fps is cinema only.

Only because 25 fps and 24 fps are "almost " the same does not mean that for PAL 24 fps does make any sense. 25 fps is fine for any "filmic" motion whereas 50 fps on a 200% interlace timeline is great for interlaced "smooth" motion.

24 fps in PAL-Land causes many problems. Transferring 24 pfs to 25 fps is not trivial. And on the contrary to NTSC 24 fps does not look more "filmic" than 25p.

360 degrees shutter option

360 degrees shutter option

i dont know why... but sometimes i can set 25p with 1/25 and the same for relatives, and sometimes this goes in RED (setup doesn't allowed) until i reach the 180 degrees value... 1/50 for 25p and relatives with variable frame rates...

some helps abput this...
