I had a chat with my Focus Puller yesterday when I dropped in to the camera prep.....on the display you can show your frame rate and either shutter speed and shutter angle....I like to see it displayed in shutter angle...I have shot 99% film for the last 10 years and although I love the things that RED does...I like the 180° or 90° way of displaying degrees rather than shutter speed.....

with the shutter displayed as degrees it is easier to do my exposure compensations....anyway, when the display is shown in shutter speed and you change the frame rate, at a certain point it is no longer possible to change the shutter speed. the value changes in color from yellow to red. Maybe I am not making sense, but the focus puller seemed to think that you can't think of exposure time in degrees terms, but I say why not...... if I shoot 24fps and the shutter display is at 180° I know the exposure time is 1/48th of a sec or at 25fps my exposure time is 1/50th or if I shoot 48 fps or 96fps or 50fps or 120fps, I know my exposure times...we know that RED ONE doesn't actually have a spinning reflex shutter, but after looking at the display on the camera and it's different colors and ways of showing shutter speed I am a bit confused not with exposure time but how RED ONE shows these values....

anyone have ideas to clarify the display issue and it's meaning.

this is not my first RED job and I have to admit I want to see the shutter angle displayed in degrees. (I am a bit nostalgic in this respect).

regards all,
Eric

Eric,

Go to the settings menu, you can change it from shutterspeed to degrees......
(it is also in the manual....) Though there is still a bug where the shuter can display 4000 degrees )
cheers

Mick

The shutter speed is limited in exactly the same way as shutter angle:
You can't get a shutter angle more than 360 degrees
You can't get a shutter speed at x frames of more than 1/x

I.e at 25fps you can't increase shutter speed beyond 1/25, if you're at 1fps you can't increase shutter speed beyond 1/1

Mick, Pete...thanks for the reply. I have got as far as switching the display to read shutter angle...maybe I put the question too vaguely....
so.....why does the shutter angle or shutter speed sometimes show up in yellow and sometimes in red when dialing in a frame rate?

yellow - non standard (i.e. not 180 degree) shutter angle/speed. Shutter angle/speed applied is as shown. (I think that's what it means - could be varispeed engaged, I can't remember off the top of my head whether the shutter speed indicator changes to yellow when you're in varispeed - certainly the framerate indicator does - either way, you're fine, it will shoot at the settings it is reporting).

red - impossible angle/speed (i.e. shutter angle requested is over 360 degrees, or 180 if open gate mode is enabled for VF) - shutter angle will be 360 degrees, regardless of value shown (180 in open gate mode).

Bear in mind that in order to actually shoot in a film style using degrees and having the exposure time change with framerate, you need to also change the shutter type to relative.

Hope that helps,
Dom.
