So can any one explain how to really use shutter angle and when you would use it. I know about shutter speed but when I change the shutter angle I dont see much of a change.

edit: I ment shutter phase

It is essentially just a different measure of the same thing, in a digital camera with no limitation of film needing to be pulled through the gate, the shutter speed can be "longer" than the normal 180 degree (or smaller) shutter angle of a film camera, which is usually just a good way to make your lovely footage look like a handycam. The rule of thumb is essentially 24fps, 1/48th shutter (180degree shutter) or faster if you want more stuttered motion. To much motion blur is definitely a bad thing since everyone has been so conditioned to the look of film, and not just that, it is a good middle ground, not at one extreme or the other.

I know about the shutter speed but the other setting shutter phase i mean does not have the same effect if I change it its not doing the same thing as when I change the shutter angle. I know shutter angle and shutter speed are just words for the same thing but on the red there are two settings speed and phase whats the phase setting doing.

I thought phase would alter the moment the cycle launches so you could get rid of bars on screens etc. as in:

U(x,t) = Asin(kx-wt+phase angle)

but this doesn't seem to happen

Ok so The shutter phase defines the moment that the shutter will open relative to the start of the frame but can some one explain that whats the effect it has on the image?

Shouldn't have any effect on how it looks but, as I understand it, it doesn't have any effect whatsoever. I hoped someone from Red could clarify this as I raised the issue somewhere around build 17.

Perhaps I'm mistaken and it's got to do with NTSC shenanigans, in which I do not dabble.

Motion blur

Motion blur

Shutter angle affects motion blur and should only be used at 180, 144, or 172.8 for normal use. Otherwise you can get "picket fencing" with camera or subject movement, and rolling shutter "jello-effect" is worse with small shutter angles, as is the "video look". Motion blur at 24fps is cinematic.

we're talking about the phase thingymabob which, I imagine, works when the shutter is set to syncro
