  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SHUT UP AND SHOOT THAT DRAGON!!!!!

I got giddy looking at how the mist diffused the light. The dragon has some of the nicest gradation I have seen in a digital image.

BTW Mike P, unfortunately a breeding pair of those spiders hitched a ride in my bag and are now infesting Toronto!

Not funny. (Heh, okay, a little funny.)

How as hiking the hill with the Carbon? (I hope you can make it to the next RUT meet-up; share some stories, what kit you used, and show us this CF-D-covered-in-ice picture).

hahahahahahah!!!!!!

Wow Brian,

To just pick one picture, A001 C003, as shot and opened in Dragon Color 3 and Gamma 3, I found myself trying to read the face of the model so as to ascertain her thoughts. After going to Red Log Film and putting a bottom heavy curve on the image, I felt she was reading me.

This camera has the ability to interact emotionally. I don't ever remember feeling the interaction before while looking at MX files. But then, maybe it is the combination of model, camera and shooter that makes your images work.

Whatever the answer, thanks for posting these for viewing.

???

"This camera has the ability to interact emotionally"

???

Has this camera passed the Turing test?

Or just a little anthropomorphism not clearly defined as such?

Brian has clearly interacted emotionally with his subject and has made good use of tools to relay it.

I agree completely, and RED has provided the tools (REDCINE) to manipulate the emotion even after capture.

Thanks guys, I am just the tech though, not the DP

Jokers and Leica cine mods to answer the previous questions

As much as I'd love to turn this into a "grade my r3d" situation the problem is I don't want to overstep my boundaries. The producer and DP were kind enough to let me indulge in my request to share the raw files in order to exemplify the camera (and its post processing abilities as well)... I just don't want to piss anyone off basically which is why I have such strict limits on not wanting to repost non r3d files.... Believe me I would love to show off finished processed stuff, but I think its better to leave that to the DPs reel or to the Producers finished content. They were kind enough to tell me I could share the r3d frame grabs, so I just want to keep them happy. They got another gig the 7th but sadly I will be away on a film then (my first film actually). So hopefully I can get them to shoot on my Dragon and let me post more frame grabs from the next one as well... I know they were very damn happy with the results and I want to take the time to thank Graeme and everyone at Red for working so hard on this camera. I think peoples complaints about sensitivity are greatly exaggerated when you take the time to look through all these shots... Thank you Jim and I really miss your commentary here! I will try and post more Dragon r3d files, but please by all means guys I want you to post your Dragon and Scarlet Dragon r3d files as well. And if anyone else wants theres graded thats fine, I just don't want my samples graded and posted merely because its a work in progress and I don't want to step on anyones toes from the production when they were kind enough to let me share native files is all, but please lets keep this going. I am sure plenty of Dragon owners have wonderful stuff to show off! Plus r3d files put the control in the audience, a good way to really show them what the camera is made of, so I always prefer to share native reds when I can since it really shows everything off, no funky workflows to diminish the camera in anyway, its all about the raw, a great feature to have with this ecosystem!

Brian, these look great. Is it just me though in that every shot is slightly out of focus? Nothing really appears to be sharp in focus at 100%. At 1080p they look great though.

Color and everything else looks great!

Some of the shots definitely aren't focused where I would expect them to be (ie often on hair instead of eyes etc), but I think most had a sharp point in there somewhere - at least for the close ups. I'm guessing this is from Brian flying through and just pulling grabs that were relevant for skin tone and not necessarily focus that is bang on :)

It's hard for me to understand all the flack the new sensor is taking when I play with R3D's like this. Sure it's shot at 400/500ISO, but areas I don't expect to pull any detail out of in the shadows still show quite an amount of information in there. Past that it's just the Red Speckle problem which becomes the most notable artifact, but with DEB around the corner I expect a lot of that should be minimized too.

Right on Brad, I was just grabbing frame grabs where I thought it would be useful...also maybe a little motion blur in some of the frame grabs as well... I can try and get some more up if it helps...but I been busy prepping for my first film gig (Ive done plenty of long from web content, but this is my first actual film job so I been trying to study a ton)

No worries, was just making sure it wasn't my monitor or my eyes going bad haha. Makes sense. Thanks for the samples.
