I am frankly sick of all the nonsense FUD being posted on RU about Dragon, its a great tool, probably one of the top ones in the world for image capturing. In order to combat this I was given the privilege to share some files I media managed yesterday for a fashion shoot. I specifically tried to get r3d frame grabs that show a variety of skin tones, male (we had one male model and our 2nd AC to stand in and I don't want to annoy female redusers so I made sure to include many male shots as per other threads I saw that annoyed female shooters with the objectification of solely women, so I tried my best to show both male and female beauty off with the grabs I selected in Redcine), females, dark shadows, stuff like that to really educationally show off Dragon in an informative fashion.

This was shot with OLPF 2 on the newest release build with red color/gamma 3 (I would of done Dragon color science if it were in a release build but currently its a post processing only technique as of yesterday, sure this will change relatively soon once its out of beta). We did not use mini mags, but went as low as we could compression wise depending on the fps.

Please note: these are not to be used for commercial purposes nor redistributed in ANY way. This is just for testing purposes educationally and to be used privately by those looking for skin tone/shadow tests. Ignoring this warning will result in consequences legally! Do not make me regret being kind enough to try and educationally show off Dragon when so many have been begging for skin tone tests of the new OLPF and color science! So be smart, keep these to yourselves, view them, grade them, but please don't repost them...

Feel free to post other r3d frame grabs here as well guys of what your doing on Dragon... I am sick of the nonsense, lets show what this camera can do! Abel tells me MX is booking better than Dragon, thats frankly insanity, Dragon is as good or better than Alexa and I think its about damn time people started to realize this!

Great skin tones as expected from the Dragon.

Nice work.

Slowly people will understand ...
Many people who take the opposite side of RU is because they have yet to Dragon hands.
Only a matter of time.

Thanks very much for the R3D files Brian.

I will defiantly shut up and shoot my dragon... Just need it to come back from RED first... ;)

Great stills, MX skin tones are great, but Dragon skin tones are just on another level.

Thanks for this Brian! Some great shots in there :)

Edit: Just spent some more time going through these grabs and playing with the knobs and dials - man I'm impressed by the amount of DR contained in these files. It's amazing to watch something that looks like it has almost no information whatsoever in the blacks actually start to show quite an amount of information as the slider is bumped up. And conversely for highlight detail - things that look clipped (clipped quite pleasantly might I add) just come all the way back down when cranking the ISO slider down. Really has hit home that if someone is only going for a proxy workflow through to grade they NEED to be using RedLogFilm otherwise they are just throwing large amounts of useable data out the window. I mean, this has always been the case, but even more information is now being throw out if this is neglected. Better yet, another reason to get people to try and adopt a RAW workflow where possible.

Brian or anyone, can someone post some of these stills as jpegs? I'm traveling for a week and only have an iPhone :(

For what I've shot with Dragon so far, midtones and highlights are amazing, and breathtaking! Shadows are great if ISO is 800 or lower.

I think a lot of people got excited to shoot ISO 2000, maybe because lots of dslr's these days can shoot very high ISO's (it's similar to how megapixels were advertised in the beginning of digital cameras, the more means "better")

But research proved more than once that most people don't know what they want (in general). Yes people might ask for ISO 2000 but maybe later they realize they don't like high ISO image.

Hey Nawaf,

I'm pretty sure Brian doesn't want the files to be reposted publicly and I'm guessing that's why he hasn't posted them as jpg's for the entire world to see. Having said that, please feel free to tell me otherwise Brian. There's one shot in particular I'd love to get some info on skintone wise but don't want to post it up and violate the terms you've kindly outlined for us :)

Scarlet Dragon, 5K 7:1, ADD. I don't have the quickplate yet, so all I can do is plug it into the wall, and point it out the window, lol.

But I did the same thing with my GH2 and Red One MX in the past, and never has a camera actually amazed me like the Dragon has. Making sure the focus was nailed, this has so much detail.. (slightly reduced quality on upload, but most of it).

This was right after a storm, and it was still dark outside from the clouds.

No problem at all, thanks Brad. Yes Brian has to agree to posting some jpeg's, and if he doesn't want to then I guess I'll have to look at them next week when I go back home.

would agree, love my new carbon fibre dragon. Took these on my recent trip to Africa. I did notice the noise people have been griping about, but it affects me less as my final is HD or 4k TV. Loved the range!

I must say that I seriously pushed my camera to extremes on Kilimanjaro, during an ice storm I shot for a few minutes, and the camera was caked in a 5-8mm of ice!! (I do have a photo too) 5 days later, in 35 degrees celsius. I'd never risk a black shade in the field.

Most shots are with the motion canon mount, plus a Canon 200-400mm F4 (with or without the 1.4 on), 180 macro, 24-70mm, 70-200m

Michael, I don't care how beautifully the Dragon performed, that white/grey spider is disgusting...

Really digging that those tent pictures... So good.

finally we have the real Dragon world here - simply great stuff. even pushed at ISO 2000, ... i put the stuff into the redcine beta with DEB, but this stuff is so good exposed, you do not really need it here, but - gives you even more better shadows - as the last r3d with the crowd seem to be a bit darker - so or so - this shows all the good of dragon and the OLPF. and the Africa stuff is awesome

I got giddy looking at how the mist diffused the light. The dragon has some of the nicest gradation I have seen in a digital image.

BTW Mike P, unfortunately a breeding pair of those spiders hitched a ride in my bag and are now infesting Toronto!
