  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi guys,

I'd be keen to hear any feedback or suggestions people might have on the new reel I've cut. It's a bit different from most of the cinematography showreels I've seen because it shows short sequences rather than montage, so I'm wondering whether people think it works, or whether I'd do better to have a montaged reel that shows shots from a broader range of projects?

I figure that for narrative work, the more important aspect is to show that you can shoot cohesive scenes, but it does play very differently to a montage cut to music so I'm a little unsure whether it's a good idea or not.

Any thoughts or suggestions on the cut would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

Updated conventional montage-style showreel:

Back in the Ye Olde Dayes (Betacam SP & Digibeta - LOL), I used to cut a 90 second montage and then have a second section with longer clips. So, if interested, a potential client can see more without having to request it (back when we sent stuff on VHS!). Maybe that approach will work now - a best of both worlds?

I'll view the reel when I can get a decent connection :)

Back home so I've got a decent connection. Just watched the Reel, as promised.

It works - but I'd switch up the order a little (the beach guys coming second felt like it slowed it down) and I'd maybe go for a more moody first shot (the guy with the 'handgun' and the veiling flare)... but this is entirely based on my image bias :) - you know your clients and what they're looking for.

I'd still go for a shorter montage style edit if using this 2 mins of material, maybe cut to 45 secs... everyone's attention span is sooooo short nowadays ;)

Anyway, hope that's some food for thought.

Hey Mark,

I stayed to watch the whole reel, it did keep me entertained. If you cut it down, make sure to keep most of the narrative clips tied together.

Good Job.

I realise this isn't entirely the point, but I want to see entirety of all of those projects. It kept me very interested.
