  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Should I Start Collecting My Nikon Lenses For The S35?

Zeiss ZF:

21mm f/2.8
28mm f/2
35mm f/2
50mm f/2 makro
85mm f/1.4
100mm f/2 makro

Get them from Duclos Lenses with the cine-mod, and you'll have the best Nikon mount set available.

Why the macro lenses and not the normal 50mm and 100mm?

Hmm...I'm also interested in this as well. I was under the impression that since the Zeiss ZF are 35mm lenses, there wouldn't be any problems with using them with an S35 Scarlet, but it causes cropping on the image? I admit that I don't know very much about lenses, as I am just starting out (but learning quickly!) I'm looking to invest $15k to $18k in a fully kitted out Scarlet S35, including lenses, but I understand that lenses (and the person behind them) make the image. Should I be saving up for an RPP set instead? Honestly, these kinds of decisions are difficult to make without seeing sample films from the 2/3" Scarlet, as that may actually be enough for my needs. I'm looking to begin directing some indie flicks as well as write screenplays, and the friend that I'm splitting this with would likely be using it to shoot some reels for school. We're both looking for shallow DoF, but the price of an S35 Scarlet kit is looking less and less viable, especially with lenses.

There are no problems using the zeiss zf's on the red. The "crop factor" as it is called is not related to the lens but rather to the size of the sensor.A 50mm lens is always a 50mm. On a 35mm camera it's a normal/standard lens, but on a dslr which has a smaller sensor, you are only seeing the middle of the image that the lens is projecting so the Field Of View is narrower.
To get the same shot (field of view) on a 2/3 scarlet as a 50mm on a S35 RED you would need to use a 25mm (more or less).
It's kind of a tough concept to get your head around, I'll admit. Especially when people erroneously talk about the crop factor of a lens.
The 2/3 inch chip on the 2/3 scarlet will give you the same depth of field as, say a varicam or a super16 camera. If that's enough for you then, go for the scarlet. Great films are not great because of their shallow depth of field.

To get back to your original question, the zf's look great, you can use them with a 35mm adapter if you want ( I still use my Letus for smaller jobs) and you can use them on a Dslr, even a Canon 5d with a cheap adapter. Get them from Duclos and you'll have a great set of lenses that will hold their resale value.
Regards,
Shane.

How much did that Zeiss ZF Prime set cost you from Duclos?
