  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Should I buy the Scarlet

why isn't there a great cinematographers pumping out Scarlet short story footage with dialogue

I'll take a stab at this one...

why not Scarlet - because there are very few of them that have been in the wild for long - and RED doesn't tend to court people to "pre-test" cameras at this level.

OTOH, there are just a couple of modestly well known Hollywood DPs shooting some respectable films like Spider Man, Pirates of the Caribbean, Girl WIth the Dragon Tattoo, Social Network, Winter's Bone, Blue Valentine, Inside Job, Prometheus, The Hobbit, Contagion, etc on the same sensor that is in the Scarlet (Epic and RED ONE MX). I am sure the Scarlet masterpieces will be forthcoming. Maybe one will be yours!!

thanks for the reply Terry...

I'm aware of the awesome movies shot on RED...who isn't that likes red haha

just wish there was a promotion piece for the release of the scarlet, behind the scenes etc

everytime i work with r3d files through redcinex...i love it

put more order through, just waiting on the red team to ask for the deposit ;)

I'm sure there are plenty of people rushing to get a somewhat polished Scarlet project out the gate first, but I'm not one of them. I have projects that I'm setting up, but I'm taking the time I need to do them right.

one question/advice

this is what i can afford to order:
(im in the UK so i converted into pounds)

Red Scarlet w/Side SSD = $9,750
media park w/64GB SSD = $1,200
Red Touch 5''inch Lcd = $1,600
Redvolt 4 pack = $750
DSMC Travel charge = $125
DSMC Side Handle = $950
64GB SSD = $950
TOTAL = $15,325
TOTAL = £9,893.46

not sure whether to ditch the revolts to save for another 64BG SSD card?
only reason is...i have 4 IDX V-lock batteries which will last longer anyways, order the wood camera plate etc

but a lot say, when you run and gun...you'll regret it haha

There was, it ended 7 Days ago. I won't call it a promotion price necessarily, but it will set you back an extra 2-3K now.

I'd say get the REDvolt's, they'd be nice to have for quick run and gun shots with the Sidehandle. I'd also look at Wooden Cameras quick back set up for your V-locks, and or VF's Brooks IDX plate(I got this one personally).

Looks like your forgetting a mount in there...

Your looking at 11,700 to get a AL Canon mount and Side SSD.

$9750 was the release price with a mount and side ssd.

I hope you got your order in before 1/1/12; those prices are no longer available as of that date. :-(

i know cinema glass like cooke primes are prob best with the scarlet

but i can't find any tests with anyone testing out a side by side comparison with prime EF's and Prime Red Pro's or Cookes, Zeiss Super speeds etc
just to see clarity/sharpness difference, any colour shifts etc

doubt i'd be able to afford any PL lenses anytime soon haha

CP2 Zeiss Primes are very nice and affordable. On a FS100 or F3, it is very nice. On a 4K cam like the Scarlet, it's a no brainer.

I'm mainly buying it as a behind the scenes camera for my 5Dmk2 videos.

Zeiss cp.2 look great but theres no difference between them and the ZE's or ZF's right?
just in differet housing with the correct focus throw?

Incorrect. Please search the forum, and you will see there has been very recent discussion on this subject. Also, look at Shane Hurlbut's recent lens comparison... http://hurlbutvisuals.com/blog

The glass for both the Zeiss ZF and Zeiss CP.2 lenses are manufactured at the Cosina plant in Japan, and are based on the original Zeiss Contax optical designs. They are the same glass with the exception that the CP lenses uses hand picked elements of tighter tolerances for greater consistency across the range. These elements are then shipped to Germany where they are assembled into the CP.2 housings.

There is a lot of misinformation being spread concerning these lenses.

All the Best!

Dave
