  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We have been shooting with our Red-Ones for over 1-1/2 years now, and have never run into this problem with a Red Drive.

After doing some shooting today, I hooked up the Red Drive to it's power and the computer, but the computer does not SEE the drive. The data is there and it was properly unmounted from the camera, but the computer does not register it.

I tried other drives, and they show up fine. I also re-attached it to the camera and the shots are there. I pressed it to my ear and it IS spinning inside when hooked up to the computer.

We use a Windows7 PC, and a RAID Array for storage.

I cannot send the Red Drive to Red to retrieve the data because there are techniques, secrets, etc, etc, we don't want anyone to know at this time.

**If I just cannot get it to show up in the computer, is there a way to transfer the data from the Red Drive "into" a Red CF Card via the CAMERA while they are both attached ?? There are not that many shots on the drive, so they would fit on a card. Is there ANY way to do that ?

It may work again if reformatted, but we do not want to lose these shots, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

George

UPDATE:

I have solved the problem, in that it turned out to be a bad Firewire socket on the drive. Plugging in another type of cable brought up the data.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help.

Be good. ;)

9 out of 10 times when I have this type of problem it's a bad cable. Try using a different cable to your computer. If that doesn't work try using the firewire connector. Also make sure you plug your power adapter in first and then your USB. Fingers crossed.

I can't be the cable because it works just fine with other Red Drives. And, I "am" using the Firewire connector.

I have also tried the USB cable, and NG.

Thanks anyway.

I have to figure a way, because we cannot afford to lose those shots.

First. I understand how frustrating this must be. And sorry if I'm giving you ideas you've already tried. Losing shoot data sucks and I've been there when an inexperienced media guy lost my audio files. Major bad day.

Did you contact the bomb squad?

You tried using the USB. Plugged in using the ac power adapter (12v 2.5a), and multiple cables?

Multiple firewire cables? (Firewire has always been buggy.) Yes, I've experienced where a cable works with one drive but not another. Don't ask me to explain.

Did you try multiple computers? Did you try an Apple and a PC?

FWIW I often find myself pulling out a backup card reader to get something off a card and never knowing why the first one didn't work that time.

My thinking is that if it mounts on the camera that the Red Drive cable and Red Drive connector must be fine but other connectors on the drive may be bad or something on the controller. Or the cable may not be delivering enough power for that particular drive. Those drives suck a lot of power and I've heard several stories of Firewire, especially being a problem.

Is it powering up, can you feel the drives spin? If so it COULD POSSIBLY be a software issue and you may be able to access the data using command line code. Unix on a Mac. Or using a data recovery software. The drives mount via Red Reader but that doesn't mean it's not connected and the computer's operating system not seeing it. You may be able to find a talented programmer who can tell the computer to copy with files anyway.

If you're willing to sacrifice the drive, I'm sure you could have a tech take the drive apart and put the drives in a different Raid 0 enclosure and attempt to copy the data that way. This is highly risky. I tried this once with a G-Raid and I was unsuccessful. Probably not a good idea but if all else fails it's indeed a possibility.

Again, good luck.

If the shots are critical.. consider playing them back at 1080 over the SDI out to another recorder or interface..
Yeah, I know, they wont be in RAW.. but you will at least have them in HD..
and have a shot at delivering your project.
I found that my drives do not have working firewire.. so I use a power adapter (NOT from the computer's USB port, from an AC power supply), and the USB cable into the computer.

I have been using a mac for this..

also.. have you tried using Shotput, or another data management program to handle the offload?

If I remember correctly, HD SDI was 720p. I would try taking out the raids from one unit to swap and always power up with the AC power. Good luck

Hey George. Glad you solved the problem and thanks for letting us know. But red letters on grey are really hard to spot, let alone read! Try yellow!
