  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ShotPro iOS previs app

Saw this on NFS and downloaded it. It's a powerful little tool right now and its only going to get better with updates.

I, too, downloaded it and am pretty impressed. Within just a few minutes, I built up a set we'll be assembling for an upcoming shoot, noticed a few potential issues and shared it with the rest of my team. We're now correcting those issues and probably saved some time and money, just within my first few minutes of playing with this app. I'm very happy!

I have a question for the people who have used this app. Are there enough design elements to completely previs an entire feature with a large variety of very particular locations and props? Or can one design their own and share them with other people in an open source kind of way? Can one also import their location photography to use them as backdrops? A few years ago I tried this other storyboarding program that was very limited and locked you in to their rudimentary selection of vanilla interiors and exteriors. It was very disappointing.

Is there an option to select focal lengths of lenses?

Clicking the link will answer that for you.

Here's to saving you a second;

Cameras: Control the camera by adjusting elevation, rotation, zoom, position and depth of field. Add multiple cameras for each scene. Customize the camera’s lens from 20mm-350mm.

At the moment there are probably not enough design elements and animations to fully previs a feature film. However, there is a large amount of items and I would be surprised if you didn't find at least some use from previs-ing your project through this app.

As far as open souce stuff I really have no idea, but I do know that they will be constantly updating their app. Also, you can get into direct contact with them and ask for them to implement certain assets that you need.

As far as pictures go, you CAN take pictures and add them in as background elements.

This app can definitely has use but I wouldn't say buying this app would replace a dedicated previs artist. However, it is a nice tool for a director or a department head to plan out a scene. I've only played with it for about an hour but I built the first scene for a short that I wrote awhile back, but never shot. The final product wasn't pretty but I'm going to guess that if I showed that to my DP, while standing on set, they could figure out what I wanted. If so, then the previs was successful. If not, then it was time wasted.

For feature work I've used Shot Designer Pro.

It doesn't do 3D / or in camera views, but I find it's easy and quick to use (especially for feature work). You can diagram camera and actor blocking and it spits out a pretty nice shot list and diagram. Easy to organize scenes and it syncs with Dropbox. It has some quirks but it's been very nice to use. I organized a 12 day feature shoot with it and will be using it again on my next feature next month.
