  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shot on RED, Edited on Adobe CS5

It would be great if you had a detailed system configuration setup (as you describe) available as a package, maybe from your tech resources. I imagine it's quite expensive a setup. But it would be nice to have a resource to go to when the time comes to trade up.

Hope this answers your question. Well worth every penny. Built for us by NLE Systems :

- Dual LGA1366 Xeon/ 5520/ DDR3/ V&3GbE/ SSI EEB Server Motherboard
-Intel Xeon Quad-Core X5550 2.66GHz 6.4 GT/s 1366pin 8MB CPU DUAL CPU
-STT DDR3-1333 4GB/256x4 ECC/REG Hynix Chip Server Memory total of 6x4GB (24GB)
-CineRAID EditPro 8 bay Tower w/ 1221X Card and Cables 8x 1TB Raid 5 Drive
-Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB SATA 10k rpm 16MB Hard Drive OS Drive
-NVidia Quadro 4800
-1000-watts with active pfc, 100% modular, powerful single + 12v rail with 90A

Thank you for sharing this experience.
There must be a codec because Premiere can't write R3D. I have no idea of what PP uses (maybe an interna codec ?). When your project is finished, what kind of master did you create from PP or AE ?
I am asking myself why I stay with FCP. Any comments on CS5 Mac ?

Olivier

You can export to anything but R3D, as that's proprietary. DPX, Uncompressed Quicktime, AVI, H264. It's really easy as PP comes with tons of presets that call be modified down to the littlest detail depending on how big you want the output file to be. Since we do Blu-ray, plan on a theatrical release and also put tons of clips up to the internet, we use many different ones. If you cynamically link to Media Encoder, you can put as many different exports into the cue and go to bed. That's what I do, so that when I get up, they're all done.

We use a PC, but Adobe has a version for the Mac, as well. I'm assuming that they are the same, except that you can't put an NVidia Quad card in a Mac and that's half the battle for us. Not sure, but I think people with Macs use Matrox?

You can choose a lot of codec, but if you wan't a good codec for re-edit later your master without opening all your project, you have to choose "uncompressed" movie with require a huge quantity of hard disk and make the movie impossible to read at 25 fps or you have to buy cineform (about 1 000 USD) wich is something equivallent to Prores.

I think you can put a quadro 4800 on Mac. But now, we will have to wait for the 4 000.

Or, you can use a lossless codec like Lagarith. Uncompressed quality in ProRes like sizes. Best of both worlds. Not as fast though, but should be fine on a dual quad-core and RAID setup. There are no shortage of VfW codecs available, for all kinds of applications. Yes, Quadro work fine on a Mac, but as has been mentioned before, the Mac drivers are quite flaky, especially considering CUDA. There have been several reports on Adobe forums confirming CS5 works better on Windows than Mac.

Congratulations and good luck!

Well this is where it is going to start getting really interesting for me as I am just finishing up my first "dream" build and battled with the dual processor vs. single for some time doing a lot of research...

However the fastest system/motherboard right now is not the EVGA SR2 (two CPUs) but the Gigabyte X58A UD9 which is set up for a single six core i7 980 and multiple GPUs. I topped mine out at 24 gigs and am just getting ready to order a CS5 package. I can tell you from watching it upload, it's the fastest computer I've ever seen or used so hopefully you will be wrong about the need for two CPUs as you stack the GPUs.

One word of warning to you guys who are thinking about doing this though. Even if I find this works great, I can't recommend a case for it yet except to say DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ ABOUT WHAT HAS BEEN APPROVED. I had to solve those issues (WHICH WERE HUGE!) with a hacksaw. Best advice is probably Mountain Mods w/a custom designer or some good tools because I don't believe there is a "just assemble it" case that works for this quite substantial board. Anyway I haven't seen one and I won't bad mouth the really nice one I hack sawed because I'm helping them fix their design flaws. Best of luck to you all!

Larry let us know how this works out...I'm on the same track as you...The Intel 980 is a monster...are you using SLI Nvidia 400 cards?

Thank you. I didn't know Lagarith, and when I was a PCman, it was a big problem. I think, we need a good list of component or computer manufacturer to be able to buy "the" PC computer that match with our specific Red-CS5 needs

Hey Dave! My major nod to EVGA is in their GTX 480 which is my GPU of choice which I certainly do recommend! It's Microsoft ratings are just great and at the absolute top. Also using Patriot 1600 which (although I could have gone with an even higher rating) worked out without a hitch and at only .01 off the top rating. Not sure it's really worth it to spend above 1600 Ram on this.

I will also warn everyone who wants to build with an SSD "boot drive" that many still do not include any cables let alone converter cables so watch out. I watched a number of "instruction" videos touting them without mentioning this CRUCIAL FACT. Funny thing though, upon finally solving the design problems and getting to the meat of this most difficult build, my motherboard/CPU chose to ignore my expensive SSD and made my 1TB Samsung the boot drive! At 5.9 it is by far the lowest rated of my components but I'm sticking with it for now! Best!

I have my OS running on dual 32 GB SSD drives, as per the recommendations of fellow reduser Paul Leeming, and never had any problem with it. I run them together and to the motherboard with ESATA cables, and after a little finagling, I forced my computer to recognize it as the boot drive. From pressing the ON button to full boot up, 8 seconds! Premiere opens in 2.5 seconds, and Photoshop in 4...

It sounds like you guys have everything pretty well handled. My hat's off to you(not the one in the avatar... that was a prop) for making a FEATURE LENGTH MOVIE!!! Here's hoping for you it is widely accepted.

Linda when do I get my copy? Linda found a great bug in ppro that we were able to fix for her so no one else out there will run into it. The work she did was really cool. I was able to go up to LA and get a first hand look. Congrats Linda on finishing!

Cheers

We're just starting to submit to film festivals. Hope we get a chance to let other filmmakers know about this great setup. Post can be such a nightmare with the wrong hardware and software. It's hard enough to craft a story. Nice not to have to worry about computers crashing, waiting hours and hours for rendering. It really made it a pleasure to focus on telling the story, instead of technical difficulties. If we get into Sundance, Tribeca or SXSW, we'll really get a chance to show everyone what we can do. By the way, you'll be getting a signed copy before it hits the street, don't worry. Maybe we can have a special RED/Adobe screening in LA at some point.

Thanks Linda for sharing your insight...
It seems like Red + Adobe Creative Suite 5 + PC
is a very cost effective ways to produce films
for the small indies.

Thanks for sharing. Also the color grading
i saw in the trailer was very nice :>
